As someone who understands dog breeding, doodles are either going to be too inbred or have too high of a fail rate of achieving the desired coat/look. Which means health problems or a lot of puppies being dumped/killed.

Oh, yes, the first election in which I held my breath and voted for a Democrat I couldn’t stand because the Republican was much worse.

one of the most infuriating parts of the Epstein story is over the same years that young women went to police and reported assault, and were ignored, law enforcement is pushing this idea that they need massive grants and manpower to rescue thousands of girls they say don’t even know they’re victims

We once loved pigeons. We might not remember that, but they do | Joseph Earp The gentle, beautiful curiosity of humans led to the discovery that these birds are able to differentiate between paintings by Monet and Picasso

It's nice to see more discussion about the origin of pigeons that, like gentle and humble dandelions, follow in the dismissive wreckage of human history, without any fault of their own.

He wants to put a dome on it? Seems he is looking for new ways to make the White House a palace.

We think of the White House as a big mansion, but the point is it's not a palace. It's a house. It's modest, one of the smallest residences for a head of state. The east and west wings are deliberately minimal and unobtrusive. It's not Versailles or Buckingham. It symbolizes civic republicanism.

OMG. This is wild. Are these people real?? Although lots of kids (including mine) begrudgingly read, I also know lots of teens who read multiple books per week. I don’t think enjoying reading is more or less rare than when I was young.

I read every book in our branch library as a fun challenge when I was 10-12. Then my mom had to start taking me to the downtown library. If I wanted a book they didn’t have, they would just order it. Now libraries have ebooks, too. Impossible to run out of things to read.

NiemΓΆller was asked by his concentration camp cellmate why he had ever supported Hitler and the Nazis. Reportedly, this is what he had to say for himself:

There have been a lot of terrible days in the last year, but August 1 stands out for how clarifying it was in its shitiness.

How can they be so angry that people they knew in high school are getting $500 bucks to play at an event and their other friends from HS own the food truck, and everyoneβ€˜s kids are hanging out. Oh, yeah, because there is a pride flag and a BLM sign πŸ™„. FT.

So what happens now? Is a non-profit going to form to take over its functions or are our public television and radio systems just going to fall apart?

Remember when we thought stare decisis would prevent Roberts from overturning Roe? I think everyone who likes the idea of a Christian Nationalist country is getting more and more comfortable with chaos.

The same admin that wants to undo Birthright Citizenship won’t try and undo Obergefell because that would be too complicated.

Right

I think MLK, Jr. writings on agape are a good place to go to understand this. It is difficult but not impossible.

IDK, I have no wish to go back to the 90s, but in 1997 I was 22, had two jobs and was in a mastersβ€˜ program, had my own apartment, and went to concerts or clubs like 5 nights a week. I had so much fun with my friends. I slept, maybe, 4 hours a night and I was definitely never bored.

Palestinian children have been killed at a rate of more than one child per hour during Israel's war in Gaza.

β€œA whole classroom of children killed every day for nearly two years,” UNICEF’s executive director said.

Here are some of their stories: wapo.st/3UCiAjn

We are never going to get rid of course evals. At my uni, regent law requires they are part of merit, p&t. Idea that student voices matter is not misplaced, but admin love of student evals is part of pervasive customer service push. Best thing we could do is put our expertise to improving them.

This @today.yougov.com poll is why I'm going to become the Joker.

The US murder rate in 2024 was likely down nearly 30 percent relative to 2020 and down nearly 50 percent relative to 1990.

As a Gen-Xer who graduated high school in the 90s, I truly cannot understand my fellow Gen-Xers who have memory holed how dangerous it was. Gunshots were normal. We weren’t supposed to stop at red lights at night because we would be carjacked. Sexual assault was a constant threat.
