07.10.2025 16:27 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Thatโs a lot! - I had just 2 last night (Large Yellow Underwings)

Easy to rear - put in a pot with some damp tissue wrapped around the stalk
Open each day to stop mould
Adults soon emerge
Brown blotches are Isochnus species - usually foliorum
Yes to pastorella on the left photo
Well done Ruth
Youโve found it โ๏ธ
It is Steve
Easy to spot too in green islands at this time of year
Lower leaf has the green island by the petiole
Doublet rack frass is characteristic. Larva hides in the mined petiole
The gales are bringing down leaves. Look for green islands at the base of the Populus species for Ectoedemia mines. This is the first Ectoedemia hannoverella of the season on Black Poplar this morning

03.10.2025 16:38 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Poplars are tricky especially as suckers Les
Grey Polar has smoother edges and feels thicker than a black poplar leaf
Look at wasteland or unkempt edges of urban lanes for this species Annie. Iโve even found them growing bu the path by level crossing gates
03.10.2025 15:29 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Adult moth
Exuviae protruding from mine
pastorella mine - long and with a strong central crease
I bought a mine of Phyllonorycter pastorella from our Weeping Willow indoors yesterday afternoon to see if an adult would emerge
It did - by this morning!
A very handsome moth
#norfolkmoths
Probably Lyonetia clerkella but need to see the frass pattern to be sure
03.10.2025 11:27 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I think thatโs Poplar Les which makes the mine Phyllocnistis unipunctella
03.10.2025 06:43 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Donโt know if anyone is interested in any of these as Iโm having a clear out
I also have the complete run from 1955 (mostly in good condition)
Make an offer?
Think itโs Phyllonorycter messaniella. P cerasicolella mines cause the leaf to arch up as the mine contracts. Your leaf stays flat
01.10.2025 17:44 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0What is the plant Steve
01.10.2025 16:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0A lovely location
30.09.2025 20:16 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Red-green Carpet last night. Sitting with its abdomen tip raised - Iโve never noticed this behaviour before in this species #norfolkmoths
29.09.2025 11:14 โ ๐ 11 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0That looks ok
29.09.2025 11:12 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Good find too ๐
28.09.2025 16:23 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Heterarthrus microcephalus mines willow leaf tips
Larva in mine of microcephalus
Blotch mining Lyonetia prunifoliella
Note copious frass extruded beneath the leaf
Heterathrus microcephalus on our Weeping Willow - a sawfly miner I rarely see. Lyonetia prunifoliella mining Blackthorn seedlings in the garden. Lots of frass extruded under the leaf is characteristic
28.09.2025 15:41 โ ๐ 13 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Left hand one definitely with long mine and strong central crease
28.09.2025 15:03 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Beaded Chestnut was NFY last night. I found this Gold Triangle on the outside of the trap as I emptied it
25.09.2025 08:54 โ ๐ 22 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Northern Deep-brown Dart is synonomised with Deep Brown Dart now Alan and all our British moths are Deep Brown Dart. Barcoding showed there was no difference

24.09.2025 07:22 โ ๐ 13 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Interesting and enjoyable art installation of fen sounds at Wicken Fen (ends Sunday) with sound hoods playing fen sounds eg underwater plants and animals etc. Loved this one as it fills with water and tips up causing an ocarina to sound!
