In this new article, Shelley Angelie Saggar from the @sharinglands.bsky.social project explores the intertwined histories of Indigenous and Irish food cultures.

Archer also successfully campaigned for a minimum wage of 32 shillings a week for council workers in Battersea. He was a multi-talented man having worked as a professional singer, studied medicine and ran a photographic studio.

He was a radical Liberal who later became a member of the Labour Party and relentlessly campaigned for racial equality. He fought off racist accusations by opponents that he was not British born, despite being born and raised in Liverpool (sounds familiar with today’s politics eh?!).

In the spirit of Black History Month, I’m going to share some of the historical people I have found really interesting.

First up is John Archer (1863 - 1932) a politician and activist who became the first black mayor of a London borough, when he was elected Mayor of Battersea in 1913. 1/1

Five things we can learn about current English ‘flag wars’ from Germany in the 1920s and 1930s HISTORY MATTERS This is the first in a new occasional series of articles on the RHS blog which show how history can help us to understand our present times. In this first article, Nadine Rossol (University of Essex) explores the power of flags as political symbols in Weimar Germany. As Nadine argues, contests over the use and display of flags have long histories and are significant. Flag conflicts are about emotions, agency and identity. They are typically blunt and intense, going to the heart of citizen politics. Historical examples, as in the case of 1920s Germany, provide us with context for and perspective on present-day manifestations.
