Some great thoughts here, philosophical and pragmatic, on the value of cataloguing (and the importance of having it done by trained human experts!).

The British Library would amount to nothing if it only had its hordes of books. The real power is in the immeasurable treasures of staff expertise and dedication. Pay them real money!

OCDSB supervisor says media interviews are not his mandate Bob Plamondon has released only two public statements since the province took over the board on June 27 and he was appointed supervisor.

It is OUTRAGEOUS that the Ford government appointed this man to replace all of the elected school board trustees and he won’t even do media interviews. No matter what you think about the dysfunction in the OCDSB, this is entirely undemocratic.

This is explicitly not what he campaigned on. This is not what Canadians voted for. This is not the mandate he was given.

The hardest part about my kid being non-binary is getting them to pick up after themselves.

The pronouns? Those were easy with conscious practice, and now unconscious use.

Watching my kid grow and find themselves? Even easier.

Infinitely easier than the alternative.

the answer to the trolley problem is not to pick who to sacrifice, it’s to dismantle the system that led to an unsafe trolley crossing.

if any part of your morality strategy involves picking a group to let die on a hill, throw the entire strategy out. it’s wrong.

Government of Canada launches AI Strategy Task Force and public engagement on the development of the next AI strategy - Canada.ca Public feedback and stakeholder engagement will inform strategy for Canada to be an AI leader

Notably missing from the AI Strategy Task Force, whose month-long 'national sprint' begins today: a librarian, a researcher in science or technology studies, or seemingly a *single person* who would look at gen AI tools with a critical eye.

Little hymn by Joseph Fansano

This poem, written by Joseph Fasano (who was also born with a heart condition), has hit me directly in the heart like an arrow today, as I watch our world's mess unfold while waiting for Kid the Younger's annual cardiology check up. We cannot save each other now. We can.

Canada Post workers walking off the job after government demands reforms | CBC News The union representing Canada's postal workers has called for a cross-country strike in the wake of the federal government announcing major reforms to Canada Post.

Canada Post is a vital institution. The government is correct that it is not sustainable in it's current form, but the answer is not endless cuts and winnowing. Reform it and fund it. The mail does not have to be profitable, it is a service, not a business. Solidarity with the strikers.

Ontario to give municipalities money for speed bumps, flashing lights to slow down drivers: Ford The Ontario government is going to give municipalities β€œa lot of money” to implement traffic calming measures to slow down drivers, including turnabouts and speed bumps, instead of using photo radar c...

Never mind the administrative and capital costs that municipalities have taken to onboard this provincial program, now we dismantle it and call that good value for taxpayers money as well? It’s not a tax grab. It’s a fine. Now we’re all gonna pay financially and with our neighbourhood security.

Residents are vocal in demanding speed enforcement cameras in their neighbourhoods because cameras work to reduce speeds, increase safety, and contribute to a sense of security for everyone using roads and sidewalks. Removing them will make cities more dangerous places.

As a nation, we need to pause and ask ourselves if this is who we want to be?

Can Canadians look ourselves in the mirror and live with the knowledge we *disappointed* the ambassador of a country that threatened to annex us and run our economy into the ground?

Ya, actually, I’m ok with it

I’m so glad that Ottawa chose not to invest in transit like other cities did and continues to make public transit and act transportation more difficult more expensive and harder to use just as we also force all employees back to the office five days a week. #Winning #Sarcasm

This is authoritarian censorship.
We must restore free speech and free thinking in a free country.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre comes wants to make sure everyone knows he's a full blown transphobe, in case there was any doubt.

He even included a shout out to JK Rowling. This hate should be disqualifying from any politician.

Thoroughly enjoyed the touring production of Hamilton at the NAC this afternoon. Strong performances all round, slick production values, a first rate show. Last time Hamilton came to Ottawa we were disappointed, but this was top notch. Tickets are $$$, but worth it if you can swing it.
