The Guardian generally has the top stories along with something completely missed by others, and states facts plainly.

Just sitting back and letting the narrator do ALL the work is so perfect. At this point I’m toying with the idea of a tobacco scented candle to add to the ambiance.

I’m listening to an audiobook to spare my eyes a bit and the tone that was taken with golf was perfection.

I must have seen the TV adaptation of The Mezzotint, which blunted the spookiness a bit. For me the actual best part was the penny-pinching, the portrayal of boys club academia, and those multiple jabs at GOLF⛳️ 😱

Well Lost Hearts either demonstrates that a well written story can be effective even if you see the end coming a mile away, or that my mind leaping to recent talk of $$$ tech bros and oligarchs using young blood and organ harvesting to live forever did the trick. 😱 #pleasingterror

A student with dysgraphia experiences so much cognitive overload when writing by hand that any retention benefit they get from it is negated. There are other ways to improve retention.

Yes! Learning to touch type would work, but I’m betting dictation will become more common in the future. Anything to keep the focus on the assignment and not have to share cognitive burden with typing when typing isn’t a skill the student has.

This was weirdly my field of expertise once. The cognitive demand of typing could certainly disrupt her train of thought. :(

Writing first is a good fix until typing skills improve. Is voice to text for fluency and then editing an option? Crazy for educators not to see this as a problem.

Yes! It was so good to read this with others and hear their thoughts on it as we were going along. It would have been hard to finish the book on my own!

Acorn. Final thoughts? B is limited in his vision of the future by his memory of the way things were in the past. L. sees the future as something molded by actions in the present. She’s right. I don’t know if it’s enough, but remaining open and responsive to the present is to survive. 🌰

I hate planes and love road trips. I might try to plot the journey on the app once I finish the novel, since most of the roads are real, as are many of the locations.

That was a hard year. Still haunts me. But I designed a course on psychological first aid for disaster victims with one of the top experts in the country. I hope it helped someone.

Katrina happened the following year. I learned who is most vulnerable and how any help is filtered through much human error and politics of the time. A few good changes were made for shelters.

For shelter in place, not an option in this novel, 1-3 months of non-perishable food. Water. First aid kit. A light source. A radio. Blankets. Medicine. Sanitary items. Games, toys. In many cases, like certain toxic spills, it’s best to shelter in place in a sealed room. Duct tape is needed then.
