A year ago today, Exp403 came to an end in Amsterdam & with it 40 years of ocean exploration aboard the legendary JOIDES Resolution. Thanks to this vessel we know about our planet. From basic research to future geo-hazards, and even astro-biology. Future vessels & programs have big shoes to fill. π«‘

The ground near Berlin, Germany, moved up 2 and down 4 millimetres, so a 6-mm movement.

Yesterday's quake and tsunami highlight the importance of ocean mapping, the discipline she pioneered.
In 2020, my friend Suzanne wrote a great article for Tharp's 100th birthday.

Wow that was a big one, can only hope that the earthquake and tsunamis wonβt cause too much harm.
8.8 puts it well in the top ten of strongest earthquakes on record.

Looks like unbeknown him, @polarrobs.bsky.social took a retirement party pic of the JR, Palmer, and Gould back in 2019.
I think Rob, @wellner.bsky.social, and @jeffgoodell.bsky.social just returned from the Thwaites Glacier on the Palmer, while we were about to leave for Iceberg Alley on the JR.

BCS is already in the high-risk area. In the future most of the US might be at higher risk too.

The scope of the US heat dome for thus weekend into next week is immense, but equally impressive is the peak intensity. In magenta is where itβs record breaking for this time of year. In addition, itβs 3.5 standard deviations from the mean at 500mb.

A new USPS electric truck delivering mail.
I have finally seen one of USPS' new EV trucks in the wild! Love their wacky form-follows-function design. Great visibility thus safer for pedestrians and cyclists, electric, more efficient, and much more comfortable and ergonomic for postal workers.
But most of all, so friggin adorable!
