Great Barrier Reef suffers biggest annual drop in live coral since 1980s after devastating coral bleaching Researchers warn reef may reach tipping point where coral cannot recover fast enough between major catastrophic events * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast The Great Barrier Reef has suffered its biggest annual drop in live coral in two out of three areas monitored by scientists since 1986, a new report has revealed. The Australian Institute of Marine Science (Aims) report is the first to comprehensively document the devastating impacts of the early 2024 mass coral bleaching event – the most widespread and severe on record for the Great Barrier Reef. Research vessel JOIDES Resolution in the port of Amsterdam.

A year ago today, Exp403 came to an end in Amsterdam & with it 40 years of ocean exploration aboard the legendary JOIDES Resolution. Thanks to this vessel we know about our planet. From basic research to future geo-hazards, and even astro-biology. Future vessels & programs have big shoes to fill. 🫑

For our international friends: We published our assessment of the #Kamchatka #earthquake here: www.gfz.de/en/press/new... -- It was one the strongest earthquakes ever recorded with instruments. The ground near Berlin, Germany, moved up 2 and down 4 millimetres, so a 6-mm movement.

Marie Tharp pioneered mapping the bottom of the ocean 6 decades ago – scientists are still learning about Earth’s last frontier Born on July 30, 1920, geologist and cartographer Tharp changed scientific thinking about what lay at the bottom of the ocean – not a featureless flat, but rugged and varied terrain.

Happy Birthday to one of the greatest marine scientists in history, Marie Tharp!
Yesterday's quake and tsunami highlight the importance of ocean mapping, the discipline she pioneered.
In 2020, my friend Suzanne wrote a great article for Tharp's 100th birthday.

Wow that was a big one, can only hope that the earthquake and tsunamis won’t cause too much harm.
8.8 puts it well in the top ten of strongest earthquakes on record.

Looks like unbeknown him, @polarrobs.bsky.social took a retirement party pic of the JR, Palmer, and Gould back in 2019.
I think Rob, @wellner.bsky.social, and @jeffgoodell.bsky.social just returned from the Thwaites Glacier on the Palmer, while we were about to leave for Iceberg Alley on the JR.

BCS is already in the high-risk area. In the future most of the US might be at higher risk too.

The scope of the US heat dome for thus weekend into next week is immense, but equally impressive is the peak intensity. In magenta is where it’s record breaking for this time of year. In addition, it’s 3.5 standard deviations from the mean at 500mb.
Thanks @burgwx for the diagnostics map!

That's one reason why car-dependency sucks. It restricts the freedom of those who can't drive & produces unnecessary costs (don't tell π‘™π‘Ž π‘’π‘ π‘π‘œπ‘ π‘Ž).

Beef prices have soared in the US β€” and not just during grilling season Anyone firing up the grill this summer already knows hamburgers and steaks are expensive, but the latest numbers show prices have climbed to record highs.

Also beef thanks to drought and other compounding factors. Though for me chocolate and coffee is more worrisome. 😬

I could snap a pic of the car speeding away. In the end it was their against my word. The cops believed me though, showed up with two cruisers at the drivers' house and gave them a stern talking. All they could do at this point, but I hope all neighbors saw them pulling up.

Was once hit on purpose by a driver, while I was on my bike. Very low speed and no injuries, but still. To my surprise, the police investigated it as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

A new USPS electric truck delivering mail.

I have finally seen one of USPS' new EV trucks in the wild! Love their wacky form-follows-function design. Great visibility thus safer for pedestrians and cyclists, electric, more efficient, and much more comfortable and ergonomic for postal workers.
But most of all, so friggin adorable!
