Thatβs a pretty disingenuous opinion. Youβre entitled to your own thoughts but the folks who remain at the NWS offices are doing everything they can to continue to protect their communityβs lives and property as per their stated mission with the resources they have in this current environment.

I discussed these WEA alerts in my post on Friday, and showed how to turn those on too: bsky.app/profile/hale...
However there are some differences. The WEA is typically only used in catastrophic/emergency situations. The Weather app notifications probably includes all warnings for your location.

Line graph showing observed and predicted temperatures (black line) in the key ENSO-monitoring region of the tropical Pacific from spring 2025 through the fall.
Today is the top of the month release of the NOAA CPC ENSO diagnostic discussion (EDD), and it will be the first time in 11 years that Climate.gov isn't releasing an associated ENSO blog update. It would have contained an updated version of this graph. [1/4]

I sought comment from NOAA and the Department of Defense on this and received this reply today from NOAA's spokesperson. They suggest we use the surviving ATMS microwave that degrades significantly at the edges. You can see how much worse off we'd be with Erick last week if we only had ATMS.

Structural changes, like the development of an eyewall, are detectable in microwave images well before they are in visible or infrared images. It can tip off forecasters to the onset of rapid intensification, which as we've seen plenty of times, can occur shortly before a storm makes landfall.
