It kinda works for horror games but I feel like in those cases it can't be an instant death, death/failure state has to be a buildup of repeat follies.

Digimons are good too, I have a Snatchmon inspired OC that works in a similar way to digivolve~

If it's being cut off from services that the device requires to function, it's a spiritual brick. Like games with always online DRM when internet is out.

Nintendo isn't quite there yet but I feel it will be soonish. As "games as a service" and only digital copies become more and more prevalent.
