BBC Radio 4 - The Briefing Room, Should the government worry about debt? Should the UK and other countries worry about rising levels of government debt?

Keeping everybodyโ€™s lights on during the pandemic and homes heated after the Russian invasion of Ukraine has helped send our national debt up from ยฃ1.8 trillion to ยฃ2.8 trillion in recent years.
How much more debt we can afford - and how much more debt do the markets think we can afford?

I think, like Enoch Powell in the 1970s, GBNEWS
has mistaken its own anti-immigrant sentiment - its own institutional racism, we could say - for majority opinion. Its presenters - some of whom have links with the far right - are working hard to make the two align, under the nose of Ofcom.

I prosecute and defend the most serious sexual offences in our courts.

The overwhelming majority of offenders are British-born. Overwhelmingly the victim is someone known to them, either a partner or relative.

Anybody purporting to care about protecting women might start there.

It does not, if you want to believe that fine thatโ€™s your prerogative. The law was changed in 1995 and 2011 - all else is irrelevant. Those screenshots are wrong, just plain wrong, just because some believe them to be right does not mean they are right.

In 1995 and 2011 it was in the news - TV, radio, all the newspapers. Those laws passed made the changes. The National Insurance fund is irrelevant to the argument. Those laws were passed with very wide coverage. I remember I was 17 in 1995.

Just asking for info here - I know when changes to pension ages were announced (1995 and 2011) - Tv, radio and all the papers. I remember very clearly. But please let me know when the money went missing and was widely reported, itโ€™s that bit Iโ€™ve missed and why does it impact pensions?

He is a member of the House of Lords. Iโ€™ve seen many posts from him and Iโ€™ve often thought heโ€™s misleading at best. This post is a lie. Steer clear of this account.

Mass compensation of WASPI women is truly one of the least deserving causes for billions of public spending in the modern era.

This is classic grab bag stuff โ€“ 2019 manifesto+++.

Everything about this viral tweet is wrong.

No: the government hasnโ€™t raided the National Insurance Fund.

No: the surplus canโ€™t be used for anything you like, without loading our children with debt/taxes.

Hereโ€™s why. ๐Ÿงต

I heard this argument used very sincerely and angrily by the Waspi campaign - and when I challenged people they said I was wrong and didnโ€™t understand!!! Members of the House of Lords shouldnโ€™t be spreading this nonsense people use it and believe itโ€™s right.

In the minds of the western far-left and far-right, every western military intervention, despite achieving a military victory, has been an unmitigated disaster that always ended in certain humiliation.

Those same people also think Russia is on a guaranteed course for victory.

My parents house in Essex was burgled multiple times in the 1970s and 1980s.

On one occasion the thieves made off with my father's treasured watch.

Some of the property was later recovered and guess what folks... the thieves weren't immigrants.

Quite apart from the fact that this is garbage - London was a much more dangerous city in the 1970s than it is today - most of us don't wear ยฃ10,000 watches anywhere.
