And look, to preempt some nonsense talks like this generate, I’m blue no matter who in a general election barring something really off the walls and unthinkable. But we’ve got to push politicians across the board to always do better. That’s just part of the package.

I really think this should be part of the Democratic line here: In America, everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their dreams and not be told they aren’t allowed just because they’re different or in an unpopular minority. Something other Dems like @gallego.senate.gov should think about.

Again I have to stress this, the swimmer that’s made a better career for herself attacking trans people tied with one for fifth behind four other cis women. That speaks volumes. This isn’t a real issue and we don’t need to be validating Republicans on it.

Secondly, as someone who, like @petebuttigieg.bsky.social , was a gay kid coming of age back when Democrats were taking roughly the same position on marriage equality, I’m less than thrilled to see him taking a similar tact here.

Part of me wants to know what forces shape a person into a weirdo like this psychologically but the larger and more sensible part of my brain tells me I’m just better off not knowing.

You’d think this would just be good sense.

Sat down with a farmer I’m friends with today and he told me the story of someone he knew that was a big Trump fan taking the Trump sticker off their truck over the Epstein stuff. Shared for anyone who needs a little speck of hope in these bad times.

Democrats have not tried any of the moral framing efforts Lakoff’s work recommends on trans rights or much of anything else. And from one person with a rainbow flag to another, just remember we’re likely the next people under the bus if we go that route.

In 2024 we took great pains to avoid even talking about trans issues or having a trans person on stage at the convention. That’s not pushing. That’s running. It doesn’t get us anywhere-it just makes us look phony to everyone, the people that we’re abandoning and the people we’re hoping to win.

Well let’s look back at the marriage equality fight. We could have kept running from “gay marriage”. Instead we reframed it as “marriage equality” & showed gay people as human beings. It became an issue of freedom and equality and tapped into empathy and support soared. That’s the way to do this.

I should add here that’s not just me spitting in the wind-there’s a body of work by people like George Lakoff, Gil Duran, etc that says doing this sort of thing is counterproductive to Democrats winning. You don’t beat them by sounding like them, you provide a moral alternative.

From a moral perspective I think the only right answer is not to do it.

From a tactical perspective it’s a bad idea too because when you repeat the other side’s frames you ultimately reinforce their entire worldview in your audience’s minds. The answer is to provide an alternative.

Well how about I just ask this: Where do we draw the line on conceding to Republicans whose rights and freedoms we agree to limit? I mean if that’s the road we’re going to go down here it seems pretty reasonable to ask who’s next and by how much, doesn’t it?
