As Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in Jamaica, we can see its approach over the past few days on seismometers. Strong winds generated by hurricanes create ocean waves and pressure fluctuations that cause stronger up and down movements in the water column, which seismometers record.

Orkaan #Melissa is nóg sterker geworden (295 km/uur) en bereikt nu kust van Jamaica.
Witte kleuren is meer dan 200 km/uur wind.😱
Dat waait wel over, maar de overlast van water, uitvallen van elektra & schoon water, aardverschuivingen, etc. gaat nog weken/maanden gevolgen hebben.

Well, here we go. #Melissa is making landfall in Jamaica with sustained winds of 185 mph, gusts >200 mph, and a pressure of 892 mb (ties the 1935 Labor day hurricane for lowest pressure in a landfalling Atlantic hurricane in history). Jamaica is about to go through what almost nobody on Earth has.

It looks like Melissa has made landfall within the past half hour. My goodness. I'm holding my breath and sending tons of thoughts to the folks in Jamaica.

A fossilized Bryozoan sea mat from over 300 million years ago and a couple of ones I found growing on some seaweed a few weeks back. Relatively unchanged after all that time!!
