We can't just wait for them to get with the program, but popes are (rightly) concerned with fracturing the unity of the Church. It's a balance and requires discernment. One of the many *many* reasons I would never want that job.

Anyway for those who lament the Church not moving faster on certain issues (and I am one of them) this is why! It's literally the largest organization in the world and there will always be holdouts, some with charisma and audiences and persistence.

At an episcopal ordination they parade the physical mandate around the congregation so it is clear that what they are about to do is an act of and with the Church. There are other ecclesiologies without the central authority, but if you want to call yourself Catholic, it's pretty straightforward!

And by "automatic" I don't mean it flies through the system; it's "latae sententiae" meaning the act *itself* excommunicates you. No need for judgment, just a formal confirmation that you did this to yourself.

I mean, this is not really a crisis per se. This is a group that was already excommunicated, had it lifted as a gesture of good faith, but never expressed any genuine desire to reunite with the post-conciliar Church. Ordaining a bishop without mandate from Rome is automatic excommunication.

I was very much thinking of Sen with the last part, his suspicion of any transcendental institution! Makes intuitive sense that he would tie that to a kind of robustness, but I forget him making that point! Some day I'll have time to read non-assigned books again and will revisit Idea of Justice. 😅
