the problem with muting is that you might see someone being annoying and stupid and mute them, but then that gives them the opportunity to slide into influential accounts' replies and butter them up while subtly pushing their agenda without you knowing they're there, which might be what's happening

elite messaging has made democrats think that the median voter is obsessed with trans people, and that they can't express any pro-trans messaging because it'll sink them. but it's only really a high-salience issue among people who *support* trans rights

a lot of people are reading this in a way that i didn't intend and maybe could've been clearer about. i don't think democrats need to act more pro-trans because it's my pet issue, i want them to do it because i think it would *help* them electorally

the elite messaging in this case would make politicians think that trans issues are of much higher salience among moderates than they actually are, which would make the tradeoff appear worthwhile

my sense is that trans issues are pretty low-salience among the general population, and high-salience among those who are strongly pro-trans, so moderating on them only serves to demotivate your base while not really attracting any swing voters

i haven't kept up with seth moulton, and i know he's cast some sketchy votes since, but i'm reminded of how he went on this tirade against trans women in sports, and then voted against the NDAA *because of the anti-trans stuff* while somehow not saying "trans" anywhere in his press release

weirdly enough, it feels to me like democrats' messaging on trans issues is often *rightwards* of their actual voting record and behavior. maybe it's another case where elite messaging (the NY Times, Atlantic, etc.) has made them think their base wants the opposite of what it actually wants

my spicy hypothesis is that we're not saying it often or loudly enough. when campaigning, trump did nothing but mock everyone he disagreed with and talk about how america sucks, and it worked! i think disdain *helps*, and people will ignore insults you direct at them if they agree with other insults
