I immediately realized I was making a stupid idpol argument with that reply which is why the one below it is me arguing that regardless of your identity you should probably not try to say any dehumanizing legislation “isn’t that bad.”

I see what my students’ online lives look like every day now and it’s manifestly worse than mine was, even though it is much less stigmatized. We probably can’t go back to the days of IRC and forums, but I think it’s helpful to understand why some of us are still so reluctant to give this up.

That’s why I get so frustrated when the solution to the real problems tech oligarchs have created is “logging off” or “disconnecting.” Logging on brought me some of my best friends! It helped shape me into an empathetic and deep thinker with connections to an outside world.
