I really don't think the two are mutually exclusive. Dark themes and tones can be played out while joking around. As with most things, context and group dynamics are key.

I don't play monks or gnomes. Paladin in Hell is still a top 5 d&d illustration

Mothership is great. I'm particularly partial to Stars/Worlds/Cities Without Number, look forward to Ashes Without Number, and still have a soft spot for Silent Legions, especially because you can easily mash them together and make the SF game of your dreams.

Real life human interaction always helps. Do you have an in-person support/recovery network?

Keep going. A good day is when things go nicely and you enjoy it. A great day is when everything turns to shit and you stay in the solution.

1) More Halls of Arden Vul using a weirdo "hard mode" 5e rule set; when I'd really rather just play it with WWN, but still an awesome group and my Friday nights for the foreseeable future; and 2) more glacial progress on my SWN solo game-to-podcast.

This is a top book for me. So many excellent GM and worldbuilding tools, options for play at multiple different power levels, tools to build out the rest of your game. I would grab Those Beyond the Walls off drivethrurpg for extra monster stat blocks.

Unearthed Arcana or Fiend Folio. Complete toss up.
