Interesting(!) that these captive-bred ducks for sale in East Yorkshire seem to be unringed in very many cases. Baikal, Blue-winged, Green-winged Teals, plus Garganeys. Dread to think how many end up in the wild and in local bird reports... #ukbirding

Precipitation potential for Hurricane Melissa. Graphic from NOAA as at 07:52 UTC on 27 October 2025.
Hurricane Melissa is bearing down on Jamaica, with many areas likely to see over 500 mm of rainfall. The impacts could be extremely significant.

I don't view biodiversity as box-ticking, but I think implementation of measures has resulted in this view- to be clearer.
Eco Integrity is not defined enough or workable enough to implement - but I think the work needs doing
27.10.2025 16:03 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
If systems were geared towards more dynamic system thinking as opposed to metricisied box ticking of X number of species/X area of species - it may be better for nature long term.
27.10.2025 15:41 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
A lot of projects seem to push X number of tree species/X % of area as grassland/woodland etc which is more chocolate box conservation than anything.
This has downstream effect of a misinformed public pushing for stuff which could harm nature (tidy town mantras/plant trees everywhere in Ireland)
27.10.2025 15:40 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Biodiversity is a subset of ecological integrity.
I witnessed someone write once that sitka plantation on peatland was a positive as a Biodiversity increase.
The push for maximising biodiveristy results in brainworms sometimes.
27.10.2025 15:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
People are too concerned with the term "Biodiversity".
This is leading to bad planning and bad programmes at the expense of nature.
Ecological integrity is a better method through which to operate, but much harder to define.

Water hemmoraging from Natura2000 peatbog in Belgium's Haute fagne. Deep drainge, bad for biodiversity, floods, summer droughts. For the sake of uneconomic spruce plantations.

And one more thing, Martin has shown what he really thinks of role of President when he backed an anti-neutrality celebrity figure over a seasoned FF politican (no comment on his aptitude or ability but see tweet).
I hope his career is ended soon.

Can you imagine TDs scrambling to change the Constitution or commentators hand-wringing in the media if it was leftists who behaved the way the spoiled vote crew did, in the same (minority) numbers, after several bigoted riots. Not so much forced to pander to them as willingly taking a running leap.
26.10.2025 08:35 β π 351 π 89 π¬ 9 π 2
If you want to be president you should have the public profile to get you on the ballot.
This profile should be built up over years of work.
If you are one of the twats who wrote steen/Burke etc. - cry harder, you stupid freak.
26.10.2025 08:47 β π 16 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
1 out of 8 people who voted spoiled their vote and you talking about a referendum?
Over 4 out of 8 people voted for the opposition candidate, let's see you fix the issue that she talked about with same gusto?
Vacuum of leadership & a petty person who is incapable of making Ireland better in anyway
26.10.2025 08:45 β π 14 π 1 π¬ 3 π 0
This is bull.
Steen has done no public service and had ample time to prepare a campaign if she was actually bothered.
Sheridan wasn't bothered to have documents right for LA meetings.
Who else came close to actually trying to get on the ballot?
Far-right twats who wanted the free publicity?

This spoiled vote thing is a Big Flashing Danger sign in the week of racist riots in Ireland - we're stumbling towards a crisis with no leadership or will to tackle misinformation, criminality, intimidation.
And we've seen it coming since the Anti-Vaxx loons started screaming in chemists.

Given the amount of road upgrades being done, the need for water infrastructure upgrades and the rollout of broadband - it would be a no trainer you would think

Donβt flake on voting just because the result is in the bag! Margin matters. Remember how awful it felt seeing Peter Casey jump from 2% polls to 23% after his attacks on travellers. A low turnout/high number of spoiled votes will be seized on by the fash. Every vote for Connolly undermines them

Bang!
And the dirt is gone!
We try to use the dig out method where possible - a few skilled swings of a mattock do wonders!
Taking out main root seems to be effective for long term clearance with minimal regrowth.
(We do have to use herbicide sometimes too)
