in a month, it won't be possible to purchase or download the software that opens thousands of beastieball's most valuable, labored project files. π
i was going to make a joke but all i can think is "why"? a generation of artists grew up with flash... what a profound waste...

Adobe making a great example that using proprietary software anywhere in your development is a massive liability, even if you fork over buckets of money. Why should people invest time and money learning your software if you just do this with no recourse.

They should be forced to open source it, it shouldn't be legal to just turn off software thousands of people rely on.

Surface is (was?) a product line of Windows laptops. I assume bazzite just has stuff to handle the oddities associated with that (touch screen, special pen, etc)

In 2022 Windows was "only" 12% of their revenue and growing way slower than their office and cloud services. I could honestly see it, in like a decade.

Yeah, feels basically the same as when I had an old macbook to make sure mac builds worked.
29.01.2026 01:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
Yeah. I think Microsoft see themselves as a cloud + enterprise provider now. I don't think it will happen soon but long term I could see them abandon Windows and focus solely on subscription/cloud/enterprise stuff (Office, AI, servers, etc).

You're running your phone with Ubuntu? I didn't know it had a mobile version!
29.01.2026 01:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
yeah... we still need one Windows PC in the office to test Steam builds on (and eventually do console builds from). I don't really see a way around that for the foreseeable future :/
29.01.2026 01:10 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
Yeah unfortunately this is the one case where I still need a windows machine in some form in our office (and to test Windows builds for Steam). I haven't done any console dev since I switched to linux 3 years ago but I'll be doing more soon
29.01.2026 01:05 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
Yeah totally, I run into issues and problems with Linux all the time, but no more than I did with Windows - just different problems. The day-to-day is just a lot nicer.

I've been using Fedora for like 3 years because it's very stable and frequently updated. It has some quirks because they intentionally do not include proprietary software so it's not always as straight forward as other distros.
28.01.2026 19:45 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
It works fine! I usually use it via the terminal (so dotnet run, dotnet watch, etc)
28.01.2026 19:43 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
(for context I was trying to make sure the original Celeste XNA version could still be built through some means, even though the general project is using latest dotnet now)
28.01.2026 19:42 β π 16 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
Like on Linux I just run "sudo dnf install whatever-i-want" and it's done in a few seconds. Windows was like, multiple order-dependent installers from broken Microsoft websites and then the versions were wrong and dependencies didn't work, etc, etc. Just a mess.
28.01.2026 19:41 β π 22 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0
I haven't used Windows in 3 ish years and I was recently doing some required work on a Windows 10 VM and just the process of installing software and hooking things up was so much more arduous than on Linux lol
28.01.2026 19:37 β π 17 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
If you're a programmer switching to Linux is pretty straight forward, and after the learning curve the day-to-day of programming from Linux is way nicer than Windows.
