@volts.wtf A friend who's a librarian specializing in kid-lit said that they broadly classify books into "mirror" books or "window" books. Mirror books reflect you and what you know, while window books are a peek inside a world unlike yours. Ideally kids get a mix of both.

Map reveals America’s most vulnerable drinking water utilities New index shows 67 million Americans rely on high‑risk water systems as climate threats outpace utilities’ disclosures.

Our new paper led by Dr. @zialyle.bsky.social assessed the climate risk to US drinking water utilities, & many of their revenue bonds don't reflect their climate risk. Here's the paper: www.nature.com/articles/s43.... Melissa Fleur Afshar wrote about it in Newsweek: www.newsweek.com/new-study-sh...

β€œWhat power have you got?
Where did you get it from?
In whose interests do you exercise it?
To whom are you accountable?
And how can we get rid of you?

If you cannot get rid of the people who govern you, you do not live in a democratic system."

...And, of course, stability isn't nearly so spectacular as instability. And being contented has none of the glamour of a good fight against misfortune, none of the picturesqueness of a struggle with temptation, or a fatal overthrow by passion or doubt. Happiness is never grand."

I worked in a Democratic presidential administration and, even then, DHS was very often the most problematic, obstinate part of negotiating a civil/human rights provision into executive branch policy.

I have been thinking about this a lot in recent weeks and want to offer a short 🧡with reflections:

For files, I now have a mish mash of legacy Dropbox, GDrive and Box. I use InSync (paid) to sync them to my desktop (Linux) so it is seamless on a day to day level. Works fine for me, but wouldn't recommend such a messy approach 🀣

@proton.me mail is fine, the app is a bit clunky but good enough. Calendar is ok too but a few niggles. Improving all the time and no regrets from me!
Haven't tried proton drive yet. The thought of migrating my work over is terrifying. I've heard of a few sync issues so want to stress test

Yes! I still have a faint glimmer of hope that the judiciary will restrain the executive as it's supposed to and that rule of law still applies. Other rulings have just been ignored though.
