I had a long conversation with a guy in Puerto Rico about how his uncle worked in the Kennedy administration to get water infrastructure built. It was literally him telling me about it in Spanish and me asking questions in English, and we communicated perfectly well.

My Spanish grammar is LEGIT trash, but if someone is speaking to me in Spanish, I'm picking up at least 80% of what they're telling me.

The best is when you're talking to someone with a similar level of English proficiency but you're each speaking your native tongue to one another.

I was JUST talking to my partner about this at lunch. I am the whitest girl to ever white up White Town... But I'm also from Dallas. I don't know a single Texan who doesn't have at least elementary comprehension in Spanish.

He sounds like a stand up guy and I hope the memory of him brings you joy.
