MY FATHER IS A BOOK, Janna Malamud Smith’s biography of her father Bernard Malamud. Read it a decade ago but it still stands out in my mind for its depth & nuance, and the challenge of the task the author set for herself.

Also CONGRATULATIONS 🤩 I love your work & I’m psyched for book 3!

Unpopular opinion (maybe?)—I think it’s helpful to readers when authors post about their books ongoing & not just once. Sometimes the 1st time I see a pre-order link, some other chaos is happening & I forget to actually click through. I need that 7th reminder that a cool new book exists

Every character thinks they’re the main character. If you can figure out what each of them wants/fears, and render them as real humans pursuing/avoiding those things, it will 1) honor their dignity & agency, and 2) often create more interesting trouble for your protagonist.
