I hear you. What strikes me in that is the parent acting like it's a competition, and they need to win. Like empathy implicitly requires hierarchy. When my kids cuddled their plushies I would say "you have a loving heart" rather than "hey put me first!" (also paraphrased)

I wonder how this ties in with "hyper empathy", are ppl who extend empathy to familiar objs more likely to feel empathy for strangers, e.g. devastated by a stranger being embarrassed or bullied, or by the thought of inadvertently harming someone?

This kind of news keeps me going.

The predominance of collaboration may be an artifact of not many people having addressed you yet. There are plenty of people who just enjoy confrontation, and even the genuinely curious often take an adversarial approach.

Humans have both, but my sense is most humans most of the time use only narrator awareness. Like Kahneman's idea of two thinking systems, fast and slow, where slow is only engaged when needed, and only for some tasks.

A thing I think we miss is that the “authoritarian playbook” isn’t a set of instructions authoritarians are reading from, it’s just a list of things that happen when narcissists get too much power.
