Picture the scene: it's 1974. You're shown this photo and told that one member of this team of building site workers is going to be the new Doctor Who.

Working out which one would not exactly be what Sherlock Holmes called a two-pipe problem, would it?

If it's right, then I love the idea that Jackie Lane has that claim to fame. (Excuse double accidental rhyming.)

The DVD production notes for The Ark claim that Jackie Lane wearing it at the end of that tale marks the first ever appearance on British TV of a miniskirt. Spring 1966 seems a bit late for that.

I never really warmed to the blue spines and only bought a few where I was missing the earlier edition. I'd love the original version of The Massacre with the inappropriately cheerful custard yellow look, but I'd keep the blue one as Peter Purves signed my copy the first time I met him.

I love the Targets. I've never much gone in for multiple editions of the same book as you have. I bought the reprint of The Cave Monsters to show support, and was really pleased when DWM gave away Marco Polo, because my first copy had all the words sunburned off the spine.

My local library's first novelisation with the neon logo; it felt like a new era. Years before I saw the TV story, the cover made me think Tom Baker wore a black suit for his vampire story. I still wish he had.

Ah, my old university city has a splendid cathedral. I've visited John and Arthur frequently over the years. On my most recent visit, I discovered that Stanley Baldwin is under the main aisle. (He'd been covered with some seating for yonks.)

Mike had been to the Island the previous year, acting as auctioneer at a charity auction held by the local group. He played an absolutely essential role in assuring some of the other guests that we knew what we were doing, and a weekend in the Isle of Man would be fun.

When you put it like that, it sounds oddly like a season finale from 21st century Who. It does give me the chance to share this picture of Mike and Anneke looking absolutely wonderful on a drawbridge that strange day.

I was sorry to learn of the death of Christopher H Bidmead on the same evening I started a 45th anniversary rewatch of the season of Doctor Who he script-edited.

It's a distinct turning point in the show's history and has his clear, clever intent for the programme running through every episode.

The Ribos Operation is on my short list of 10 out of 10 Doctor Who stories. Quite magnificent.

This is such sudden and upsetting news. John was a warm and erudite contributor to social media, and so much more. I had the pleasure of exchanging a couple of messages with him. His last Bluesky post was only a few days ago, brimming with joy and love as he celebrated his husband's birthday.

Absolutely superb research. I found myself wondering if this could be shown to Anneke Wills to see if it jogs any specific memories for her. Could be more effective than the open-ended "What was it like...?" questions.

Probably one of The Ice Warriors. The plot doesn't really advance, and there don't seem to be any major characters or sets that we don't see in the extant episodes.

Not original I know, but I'd love to see the end of The Massacre. Actually, I'd love to see any part of that story. I'd also like to see the scene in The Power of the Daleks that ends with Ben and Polly laughing for a reason the script, soundtrack, and telesnaps doesn't explain.
