I mean, I’m just spitballing here, but it seems like the low oxygen levels in the brain could affect glutamate, and too much of that can cause nerve damage.

The symptoms are similar to Lyme, and other infections that cause an endotheliitis. Once you get endothelial dysfunction, it can affect inflammation, metabolism of lipids and sugars, and the immune response. It also can cause repeated tissue hypoxia, which can cause glutamate to not get broken down.
