Namely, The Stanley Parable and Deltarune's Weird Route are both metacommentaries on the way games react when we 'play along' them vs when we 'play against' them. I think a good game that measures up to scrutiny should support both styles of play.

Games can and should be stronger than that. They can be broader than that. Some games already are! Some games have even commented pretty heavily on this tendency and this divide.

git gud mentality actually treats games as something very delicate which can be inadvertantly broken at any time. It's kind of sad how we've been conditioned to never push in the wrong direction or else we'll break through the thin film containing the "designer-intended experience"

Dark Souls doesn't need difficulty modifiers because it's a game that already allows for extreme flexibility of play to make the game easier or harder depending on the player's preference, something that most games don't provide at all even when they do have difficulty sliders.

To think the experience of a game could be so easily cheapened by engaging with it differently represents an insecurity or a lack of trust in the vigor of that game, when actually one of the best parts of dark souls is that it rewards players of all skill levels and all playstyles

This is why the discourse around Dark Souls is so rancid. The game wants you to play smart and exploit its weaknesses, but so much gamer pride has been attached to the ability to memorize and execute that they often consider any other playstyle an inferior experience or even a straight up cheat

imo Learning the patterns of a boss is sort of a way to brute force a video game that's asking you to rethink your strategy and play differently. Yeah it's possible to learn exactly when to dodge and where to heal but in many cases the game is actually trying to test you on something else entirely

To be fair SMB3 also represented a pretty significant technological leap as well. NES cartridges had hardware expansions inside them and SMB3 was multiple generations ahead of SMB1 in that regard. bc of this iirc SMB3 was the first NES game to diagonal screen scrolling

Unlike many other traditional roguelike video games of its era, Shiren the Wanderer is beautiful and has a banging soundtrack. It was originally released only in Japan but it has since received a fan translation by Aeon Genesis and a remake available in English for the Nintendo DS
