Collector & repairer of vintage computers and the odd typewriter. Was @Devilish_Design over on the bird site. Warning! This profile might contain images of exploded RIFA capacitors!

15.10.2025 22:35 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Hello! I'm very proud to announce that my yearslong research project into the lost Sphere computer, corporation, and community has launched a crowdfunding campaign today for a professionally-printed hardcover book, with a compelling narrative and images! www.kickstarter.com/projects/bzo...

11.10.2025 13:01 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Do we know where this prototype is? Museum, private collection?

The National Museum of Computing at Bletchley held a sale day to shift some of their unwanted stock and raise money for the museum. I went along to see if I could pick up a bargain.

Write once, run anywhere! (1/2)
At #retrofest a few weeks ago I really enjoyed the setup @devilishdesign.bsky.social had with an Altair 8800 using a teletype as the user interface. He very kindly printed me off a listing of his BASIC Mandlebrot generator.
Awesome Stuff! π
08.07.2025 18:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Indeed! I thought it would have been a lot more common. Obviously not much use on the Teletype but there were far more optical readers about.
06.07.2025 07:31 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Mike has also uploaded it to his website....

I copied the tape using my high speed reader / punch which took under a minute. Figured the optical reader was less likely to damage the tape than the Teletype :)
05.07.2025 15:55 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I've posted a copy of the tape on this thread...

Woohoo! Microsoft BASIC 2 loaded from paper tape! π
05.07.2025 15:26 β π 43 π 5 π¬ 4 π 1Copy of the tape made. Let's try and load it π
05.07.2025 15:12 β π 27 π 1 π¬ 1 π 1Going through some old paper tapes and found this. It's version 2 of Microsoft BASIC from 1975. Version 1 was never released to the public which makes this Microsoft's first commercial product and it's not been archived anywhere! Time to break out my tape reader... π
05.07.2025 14:00 β π 132 π 29 π¬ 4 π 3What's the best thing to do on a sunny day at the seaside?
Visit @shortcircuit.org.uk of course!
Join me and my pal Thomas as we poke around a vintage computer "Gallery" and chat to the amazing people behind it.
We also had ice creams and a lovely seaside lunch.
This morning, I have been mostly testing Apple II disk drives. They all work! π―
28.06.2025 10:44 β π 22 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Oooh, I had the blue one back in the day (Slightly earlier version without the front USB). Athlon XP 1800+, Radeon 8500 and a pair of 60Gb HDs. Had it paired with a dark grey 21" SGI monitor.
