Walked a lot around Sligo over the last few days, the air is so much cleaner than a few years ago. One anti-social house burning smoky coal. But otherwise a big improvement.

All markets, all homes and all grids will work this way in the future, many already do. If we do it quickly, we gain competitiveness, security and hit climate targets. If we do it slowly, we lose the first mover advantage, create extra warming and provide more funding to dictators.

Worth noting that the EU isn't the only part of the world considering electricity market reform - and doing a bad job of integrating demand side/consumer energy resources into the discussion.

(Yes I know we just finished another EU power market reform but the debate on the next reform is starting.)

Successful retrofit doesn't just rely on tackling costs and funding, but also enabling approaches which put people at the centre. This goes beyond the commission, but Carbon Co-op will be releasing some research in 2025 about the challenges of delivering people-centred approaches to retrofit.

We all need to become eco-populists. That means championing policies that significantly lower daily costs while lowering emissions. Heat Pumps for All, alongside much more robust tenant rights; free and better public transit; price caps on green energy; make polluters pay for the transition.

2 interconnectors working for years 1000MW, 2 under construction 2024/7 (1200MW), 2 approved yesterday by ofgem (1200MW) for ~2030. Massive benefit in terms of balancing VRE.
