A @starkeycomics.bsky.social graphic shows just how many of the 'gen' words are related.

Gemini, genocide, gentle, gentleman, agenda, gentrified, genes, gender, general, Genesis, genitals, genetics, genius...

My guess would be that these (gin, ginger, ginseng, jinx, Jenga) aren't cognates?

Kendrick Lamar's verse on the Clipse' song Chains and Whips got a lot of attention, including for the 'gen' scheme which uses a lot of etymologically related words...

Thanks @litdrive.bsky.social for a great #LitdriveCPD25

The speakers gave so much insight that informed my talk on grammar in the schools.

Secondary teachers are keen to use metalanguage to teach at sentence-level, but rarely supported to build on the grammar brought from primary.

What's next? The report commits to

'review the curriculum and how this assessment might better equip pupils to use these foundational building blocks fluently.'

&

'conduct closer analysis to diagnose each subject's specific problems and explore and test a range of solutions.'

In the assessment section, grammar is even singled out as a 'concern':

'the standalone end of key stage 2 assessment on grammar, punctuation and spelling might lead to the teaching of textual features in isolation at the expense of a sound understanding of reading and writing.'

HWR, in the section on 'breadth' at KS1-2, some schools report:

'a struggle to cover all content with sufficient depth [which] negatively affects pupils’ ability to master foundational concepts'

The breadth of grammar content may be seen as one of the culprits here

Some of the mood music is positive:

The curriculum will continue to be 'knowledge-rich' & learners should leave with 'in-depth' knowledge of English

Likewise, the fact that SATs won't be removed, makes the continuation of the study of grammar more likely (at primary at least)

What will happen to grammar in the curriculum review?
