Furthermore, I think on platforms like Bluesky or YouTube this is even worse of a problem. Because people will often read the comments BEFORE engaging fully with the original material. So you begin forming opinions or getting mad before even fully meeting the work on its own terms

Hot take: I think replies/comment sections are antithetical to critical thinking. They work great for socializing, but if you put a comments section under for example an academic article, nothing of value is gained. It just encourages readers to fire off a quick quip and stop engaging there.

In a strange position where I think there are massive, massive social harms to the proliferation of AI (misinfo, deepfakes, predatory 'companions', surveillance, labour rights) but also feel the mainstream arguments against it range from unconvincing (water) to actively harmful (copyright; "soul")

The goal has to be removing those people from *power*, restorative justice, and a society that believes in rehabilitation over punishment. If we can't learn that as a society, we will only ever be exchanging tyrants (2/2)

Too many people on all sides of the political spectrum are poisoned by carceral thinking. We have to abandon the idea that people who commit abhorrent acts (yes even the ones you're thinking of) are irredeemable monsters that must be locked away from society forever. (1/2)
