If I have to explain to you why it's a bad idea to use a machine that makes shit up 15-80% of the time AND destroys the environment AND contributes to rising fascism and genocide AND puts brilliant skillful creatives out of work by stealing their work, then we're already speaking different languages

Birds are dinosaurs who shrugged off a couple apocalypses. Some eat bone marrow. Some drink nectar. They outswim fish in the sea. They smile politely at gravity’s demands. ‬

β€ͺI am grateful to see them. I am grateful to feed them. I am grateful to know them.‬

One million starved children and no shortage of food

One million starved children and no shortage of food

this is one of the worst crimes in human history and the entire global north and all of us in it share the responsibility

To write an article justifying Israel at this moment, when Palestinians are dying of malnutrition and being murdered for seeking food as directed, while Israel prevents team after team trying to deliver aid from entering Gaza, is depraved.

Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die
July 21, 2025

AFP has been working with 1 writer, 3 photographers and 6 videographers, all freelance, in the Gaza Strip since its staff journalists left in 2024.

Along with a few others, they are now the only ones left to report what is happening in the Gaza Strip. The international press has been banned from entering the territory for nearly two years.

We refuse to watch them die.

One of them, Bashar, has been working with AFP since 2010, first as a fixer, then freelance photographer, and since 2024, as lead photographer. On July 19th he managed to post a message on Facebook: β€œI no longer have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin and I can’t work anymore.”

Bashar, 30, works & lives in the same conditions as all Gazans, moving from one refugee camp to another under Israeli bombings. For > a year he’s lived in utter destitution, working at extreme risk to his life. Hygiene is a major issue for him, with recurring bouts of severe intestinal illness.

Since Feb, Bashar’s been living in the ruins of his home in Gaza City with his mother, 4 brothers & sisters and the family of one of his brothers. Their house is devoid of any furnishings, except a few cushions. On Sunday morning, he reported that one of his brothers had β€œfallen, due to hunger.”

Even though these journalists receive a monthly salary from AFP, it’s no longer enough to buy food, or they have to pay completely exorbitant prices. The banking system has collapsed, and those who exchange money via online bank accounts charge a commission of up to 40%.

AFP no longer has the ability to provide them with a vehicle and there is not enough fuel to allow these journalists to travel for their reporting. Driving a car means becoming a target for Israeli airstrikes. AFP reporters therefore travel on foot or by donkey cart. (alt txt continued in next post)

A horrifying statement published today by the Editorial Committee of the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

"Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die"

this is a good illustration of what β€œcompromise” on trans rights looks like. there’s no β€œeveryone gets rights but we take it easy on the pronouns.” if you head down that road you will end up denying that trans people are real.

Today is a good day for people to cancel their subscriptions to the institutionally-transphobic The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Guardian, among others, and send some of that coin to trans journalists, or just trans people in general.

I want to be clear: this is what American prisons are like.

I spent years posting about the humanitarian crisis in U.S. prisons. The criminal legal system consigns Americans who are incarcerated to live like this FOR YEARS. DECADES.

There are 70,000 undocumented Polish people in the US. We haven’t noticed them being swept up here in Chicago, the city said to have the second biggest Polish population after Warsaw.

ICE has been very active in our Latino neighborhoods though.

Screen capture of Arizona BLM's announcement that they've approved yet another copper mining exploration project. Before they made the official announcement, Faraday Copper had installed gates months before, and widened roads - while the Environmental Assessment was still supposedly being reviewed. Faraday already knew they were approved. This is OUR U.S. PUBLIC LAND that this Canadian company is exploiting and destroying.

Of course BLM approved the #copper mining exploration near my home - right next to AZ's last wild river, during year 26 of megadrought, during a year of severe rain shortage.

2-3 years, 67 sites, 24/7 operations, guzzling 70,000 gallons of water each. For free.

But we've got lots of fight in us.

The article quote says it’s good β€œif” we can police people on our own political side, but have they ever spent time with people on the left, even in online spaces?? Self-policing and inner-arguing happens so frequently lots of people want to do it *less* because it’s become a distraction.
