There have been lots of other pivotal moments around HIV and my understanding of the world as a gay man - but the latest was @thrasherxy.bsky.social ‘s work on the “viral underclass”, which I can’t recommend enough.

Years later in grad school I tried to recreate that moment by inviting over some of my queer friends to my apartment on world AIDS day to throw flowers heads into a big bowl of water. Two friends shared with me they were HIV+ that night. Another powerful memory of Dec 1.

It is incredibly strange that these schools seem to factor in zero reputational, enrollment, or recruitment damage to their “settling with Trump” equation, when clearly there’s a major hit to all three.

It's kind of wild how much of science depends on "i emailed research group 1 and research group 2, but research group 1 didn't respond so we went in the direction of research group 2" and pursued that line of research for years.

Thank so much! I think i have it: With by =, the covariates change the precision of the estimate and with variable =, the covariates are changing the estimate as well because it holds them constant across counterfactuals.

What I don't fully understand is why the results of by = don't change when adding covariates, but the results of variable = depend on covariates. So I usually start getting results across models that are the same and then realize what's happening is not what i expect re: margins x in stata.

True - but I’d bet most respondents still interpret it on a 0-6 scale where 1 is somewhere between never and rather unlikely. Empirical question tho. I wouldn’t let that stop you from using the scale if it meets your needs in other ways.
