2/ First, a simple acknowledgment of World AIDS Day, and the impact of HIV over the last half-century: the virus has already taken the lives of approximately 44 million people, and 40 million people are currently living with HIV. theintercept.com/2025/12/01/w...

Trump Gutted AIDS Health Care at the Worst Possible Time By the first World AIDS Day of his second term, Trump gutted LGBTQ+ employment globally and put humanity at greater risk of AIDS.

1/ For six months, I've been traveling the world on Pulitzer Ctr & Fund For Investigative Journalism grants investigating Trump's effect on HIV & LGBTQ health. On World AIDS Day, @theintercept.com is publishing an overview essay of Afeef Nessouli & my findings. theintercept.com/2025/12/01/w...

There have been lots of other pivotal moments around HIV and my understanding of the world as a gay man - but the latest was @thrasherxy.bsky.social β€˜s work on the β€œviral underclass”, which I can’t recommend enough.

Years later in grad school I tried to recreate that moment by inviting over some of my queer friends to my apartment on world AIDS day to throw flowers heads into a big bowl of water. Two friends shared with me they were HIV+ that night. Another powerful memory of Dec 1.

World AIDS day. Saw this video today about my hometown’s AIDS network where I occasionally helped out as a baby gay. Gordon was a life-changing mentor for me in high school. The candlelight vigil shown and throwing flowers into the harbor is a powerful Dec 1 memory. youtu.be/dzQQXUcsEGM?...

It is incredibly strange that these schools seem to factor in zero reputational, enrollment, or recruitment damage to their β€œsettling with Trump” equation, when clearly there’s a major hit to all three.

It's kind of wild how much of science depends on "i emailed research group 1 and research group 2, but research group 1 didn't respond so we went in the direction of research group 2" and pursued that line of research for years.

Thank so much! I think i have it: With by =, the covariates change the precision of the estimate and with variable =, the covariates are changing the estimate as well because it holds them constant across counterfactuals.

What I don't fully understand is why the results of by = don't change when adding covariates, but the results of variable = depend on covariates. So I usually start getting results across models that are the same and then realize what's happening is not what i expect re: margins x in stata.

The marginaleffects package avg_predictions() option that corresponds to stata’s β€œmargins x” is β€œvariable = x”, not β€œby = x”.

True - but I’d bet most respondents still interpret it on a 0-6 scale where 1 is somewhere between never and rather unlikely. Empirical question tho. I wouldn’t let that stop you from using the scale if it meets your needs in other ways.

HHS devises legal playbook for future grant terminations, internal memo shows Exclusive: HHS devises a legal playbook for future research grant terminations, an internal memo shows.

Update on a significant development NIH grant terms.

On 10/1, a change to grant making regs went into effect that gives NIH more power to terminate grants for policy reasons.

But to use this power, new grant terms must include specific language. See @aniloza.bsky.social w/ the story from July.

It’s now clear that information on U.S. government websites can no longer be trusted.

It’s both heartbreaking and infuriating to see how quickly this administration has undermined science, public health, and the credibility of our scientific institutions.

On average, Musk will make $3 billion more per year than the 1.4 million elementary school teachers in the U.S. combined.

Each figure represents 1,500 elementary school teachers. Together, they made $97 billion last year

Humans are bad at big numbers. Which makes it easier for billionaires (and trillionaires) to get away with hoarding wealth. Because most people just can't comprehend how much money that is.

So, I appreciate this WaPo effort to help people visualize what ridiculous amounts of wealth really mean.
