Was checking out the snowfall totals on CoCoRaHS from the lake effect event on Friday... I didn't realize that some locations got over a foot in Madison and Oneida counties! I ended up with about 8 inches in the city of Syracuse

The US dodged a bullet this year with no direct hit by a hurricane… especially during the government shutdown. Huge props to the forecasters at the NHC who worked without pay (and the hurricane hunters!)

So cool: northerly wind at the surface bringing in lake effect snow from Lake Ontario, and southerly wind higher up in the atmosphere bringing in snow from the south. Two different types of snow ❄️

Dems are on track to flip the Onondaga County Legislature (where Syracuse, NY is). It was 12R-5D. Dems are currently up 10D-7R. That's 5 seats flipping in a 17 seat legislature! Don't overlook the local elections people!!

These stations provide critical weather data during extreme rainfall events and tropical cyclones. Emergency responders need this data to make real-time decisions, and meteorologists need this data to make accurate predictions (and to plug into weather forecasting models!).

Just plotted the 58 METAR stations that are expected to stop reporting observations due to the FAA ending their contracts. Overlaid the counties in NC that issued a disaster declaration after Hurricane Helene last year.

SHUTDOWN: NOAA closes; Hurricane Hunters work without pay Since the federal government shutdown began, public servants are already feeling the effects of Congress’s failure to move forward with funding.

Shockingly, because of the government shutdown, the hurricane hunters are going unpaid as they risk their lives for theise data. And staff at the National Hurricane Center are also without pay as they continue to perform their critical duties during this record-breaking storm.
