I'm working on content to demystify competitive Magic, especially for limited formats and I would love to hear from y'all about things you've learned that you wish you'd known before you started playing competitively.

Exactly. Let them know that sometimes some competitive seasons will be stale until bans happen. I would also recommend they don’t invest in “the deck” since it might become somewhat worthless postbans. Those feelbads might have new players leave competitive altogether.

One aspect to tackle is for competitive players who hate seeing the same decks over and over again. I played competitively since back when it was called Type2. And everytime I "quit" Magic it was because of the staleness of Standard. Playing against the same deck in every match grew stale real fast.

If you play an untapped mana rock on turn2 with no 1CMC spell to cast with it, then where’s the advantage over a turn2 Rampant Growth? Also, Nature’s Lore and Three Visits doesn’t tap the forest it searches for.

Just venting and hoping it (search) improves along with other quality of life features like DM'ing images, etc.

Lots of things on BlueSky are ass. But I’d rather be here than support a classist, elitist, racist, mysoginist, tonedeaf billionaire on X. Hopefully that isn’t enough and this app actually begins integrating the features that made Twitter so smooth and useful.

While I get your point, a talisman getting destroyed sets you back more than a land that entered tapped for a turn. And if the opponent doesn’t need to cast their boardwipe, then it was a dead draw. And even then, I’d rather run cost reduction effects over mana rocks anyways.

I play mana dorks over mana rocks in my Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest deck because they accelerate mana while also being bodies that synergize with what the deck wants to do. That's why my comment was only broad in generic terms, not in absolute terms.

Mana dorks are even weaker than mana rocks, though. But in the right deck they're great. But as a blanket statement, they're much weaker than mana rocks, which are in turn much weaker than land-based mana acceleration.

I'd even say it's strictly better just because it's a lesson.

Almost all my green commander decks run Rampant Growth (along with Farseek, Nature’s Lore, Three Visits, and Into the North). Farseek is way better than any 2CMC mana rock (in Commander), in my opinion. I had to reread this card like 50× when it previewed.

Exactly. Commander doesn’t need that change. Play a different format instead. Commander shouldn’t be everything and everything shouldn’t be Commander.
