I don't encourage students being confrontational about this, but it's very important that teachers hear directly from their students about this. Drastic changes in teaching norms need to lead to open conversation about impacts and student expectations.

I think undermining teachers is the only way when they are clearly misunderstanding their duty to encourage students to think rather than just churning out text that has no soul behind it. If the student is telling you this, it implies that they are already willing to consider defiance.

This is good, and consonant with a thing that annoys me about LLMs, but it's also worth noting that overfitting on language as definitionally central to thought preceded language models by a lot; Chomskyan linguistics and hideous psychological theories like "mentalese" have a lot to answer for.

i think the fundamental disconnect here, and i say this as an engineer without much creative talent, is that a lot of people who don't do creative things regularly (or ever) look at creative output (writing, music, whatever) as a product, and consume and experience it like a baby looking at a mobile
