People want to consume media that flatters them instead of challenging them, and thereโs now a way to do that at scale, and that incentivizes the production of it. This synergizes well with something @opinionhaver.bsky.social said that has really stuck with me:

Perhaps not in specific policy areas - two bills or one on the hill, policy in the mideast. But certainly functional control of the state apparatus.

standing in an brick-lined egg-shaped sewer tunnel looking to the vanishing point where the flow disappears into darkness. built in 1873 and photographed in 2022, the bricks are caked with chalky mineral deposits, illuminated by the flashlight of the maintenance crew photographer. there is milky white sewage ankle-deep at the bottom of the tunnel.
when things are happening faster than we can comprehend, think about this sewer that was built under Cleveland in 1873 and still being used today.
