Last weekend, I had the pleasure of spending an afternoon with Tammy from Wing & A Prayer Farm. She is such a dear soul with so many talents and absolutely gorgeous fiber!

This image was taken of us at Rhinebeck this past October.

Love!!!

I often hear people complain @ finding VM in their yarn, but for me, I actually love seeing it there. It means that it came from a farm and connects me to where I purchased it from. I also find it as a moment for meditation as I either decide to leave it or carefully work it out from the fibers. 🧶💕

What’s on My Needles?

I'm currently knitting up my ninth Happy Sleepy™! From the moment I completed my very first one, my mind started racing with ideas for different 'pajamas' to decorate my little guy with. This creative spark led me down an exciting (and challenging!) path: attempting to work stranded chart patterns across sections of short-row shaping.

I'll be honest: I'm still working out the details. I haven't been able to find any resources on how to do this properly, so I'm essentially winging it in my quest to create the perfect argyle pattern! The two argyle versions already on my Ravelry projects page aren't quite perfect yet, but this current project marks my third attempt at cracking the code on stranded knitting across short-row shapes.

While perfecting this technique, I'm also dreaming up a Holiday Happy Sleepy™, so stay tuned for that festive surprise!

Right now, the project on my needles is all about working out the details for my "Argyle" pattern. Once I've got it just right, I'll create a chart that will become part of the official pattern. Good news for early supporters: anyone who has already purchased this pattern will automatically receive the update, plus one additional stranded chart as a special holiday surprise!

The yarn I'm using is Junction Fiber Mill's Making Tracks DK in the colorway "In The Clearing". Because I was able to visit the mill in person, I had the luxury of hunting through their inventory to find this beautifully delicate, pale version of the colorway, and I absolutely love it! You can see it in the photo below on the right, with more typical skeins of this colorway on the left. Honestly, I love them all!

I just cast on my ninth Happy Sleepy™! This one is a gift and will soon be making an international trip, but not before I work out the charting details for an Argyle pattern!

“A Portrait of an Artist” c.2025

I recently met up with a group of friends I’ve known for years in NYC, though a couple of them I was meeting in person for the first time. We connected years ago while working on a competitive team playing GISH (the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt). Every year when the list dropped for this week-long hunt, we’d stay up all hours of the night completing tasks, with the hope of one day meeting each other in person. While we never won a hunt together before GISH ended, we vowed to meet up someday.

Last year, several of us met in Austin, Texas and had a blast. This year was NYC, and a couple people who couldn’t make it to Texas came to the city. We still have a few people from our team we haven’t met yet, so maybe another year!

This photo was taken at the MoMA, where we enjoyed members-only early entry and had fun as we always do, taking random photos and just enjoying time together. This is my attempt at posing for “A Portrait of an Artist.“

If you’d like to see some of our crazy entries, check out these accounts @gishteamgoats @teamgoatzilla on Instagram. (After the closure of GISH, another scavenger hunt group was formed called “The Rogue Hunt”, where I participate each year in August now. If you’re interested in playing for good, you can learn more and sign up at @theroguehunt.)

Vermont Textile Producers Eye a 'Farm-to-Closet' Movement Across the state, farmers, spinners, weavers and knitters strive to slow the runaway train called “fast fashion” as they produce natural plant and animal fibers.

A great article about Vermont’s ‘Farm-to-Closet’ Movement and the Northern New England Fibershed!

Today is the final day of NY Sheep & Wool 2025, and I am beyond grateful for the generosity and friendship of these amazing knitters. Not only did they share their accommodation with me, but they shared so much more… their stories, their laughter, and their love of knitting. 🧶

Two “Happy Sleepy” abstract animals are shown balanced on a piece of driftwood by the shores of Lake Champlain. The one in the back was hand sewn in upholstery fabric by artist, Magda Wojtyra, the original designer of the Happy Sleepy. The one in the foreground was hand knit by knitwear designer, Ona Wöldten, based on a knitting pattern for the same playful creature.

The pattern begins with the equivalent of two toe-up hand knit socks, which can either be done singly or two-at-a-time. Short-row shapes are used to give the body form and the whimsical curve, and two half moon eyes are hand embroidered on after completion.

This is a great stash buster project and makes the perfect gift for the holidays. Use as an emotional support friend or cozy neck pillow. The Happy Sleepy will definitely invoke smiles in anyone who sees it.

A hand knit plush object or tactile sculpture is photographed on a teak tabletop. He is knit to look like he is wearing plaid pants with a belt and buttons at the crotch like vintage undergarments. An antique key hangs from his belt. His upper portion is hand embroidered to look like pin-stripe suiting. Two smiling half moon eyes are also embroidered on. Next to him is a vintage woven cap and steampunk glasses.

The knitting pattern for this little guy is very basic, but I’ve been trying to work out stranded knitting charts to give it more whimsy and character. Figuring this out across sections of short-row though creates unusual effects and currently I don’t feel like I’ve got it perfected. I’m going to keep trying to work it out to see if I can achieve better results.

I do though still adore this one. Even with all the quirks, I think he’s perfect!

This is my Happy Sleepy™ that I’m familiarly calling “the Artist”. It was one of my first working prototypes for this design. I wanted to see what would happen if I added stranded patterning. It still makes me smile so much! Although not part of the pattern, I’m still playing around with ideas.

Two hand-knit minimalist objects appear on a worn wooden deck surrounded by daffodils. They are each made using natural sheep’s wool. The one on the foreground is a light grey color and the one in the background is a warm brown. Each has the iconic half moon smiling eyes that identify it as a Happy Sleepy design.

The response to yesterday's Happy Sleepy™ pattern release has been absolutely incredible! This little abstract creature is already winning hearts with its personality - those sweet minimalist eyes that transform from wide-awake wonder to peaceful slumber with just a flip.

What makes this design so special goes far beyond its adorable factor. This project represents a beautiful story of global creative connection - from the original 2001 sewn prototype by Polish artist, Magda Wojtyra (inspired by an illustration from her partner Marc Ngui), to our months of collaborative development.

The construction is familiar yet completely fresh - starting with toe-up sock techniques, then transforming through strategic short-row shaping into this delightfully dynamic creature. The pattern includes gorgeous illustrated charts, making every step a visual journey.

At just 8" x 15", your Happy Sleepy™ is perfectly sized for travel adventures while embodying the artists' beautiful philosophy: "Whether happily proactive or sleepily withdrawn, they are avatars of our freedom to choose."

Test knitters have already brought such personality and love to this project - each one unique, each one a reminder that through craft we're creating tangible symbols of joy and free will.

As the artists share: "Making fine craft is a physical meditation that can restore our spirits because creating puts us on the making, versus just consuming, side of culture."
