Today we celebrate the 98th birthday of conductor Herbert Blomstedt. Still active, still touring, still entrancing orchestras and audiences alike.

Very tricky indeed, but most days it’s: DLvdE, 10 (Adagio-Andante only) … 4, 5, 9, 3, 8, 2, 7, 6, 1

A photograph of an isolated cresting wave spotlight by the sun against a stormy, dark blue sky. Spindrift flying off. Easy to imagine a face within the surf.

From my β€˜Sirens’ series, this is Boreas, Greek god of the cold north wind, storms and winter. Boreas was often depicted as a striding, winged god with ice in his beard or as a gust-blowing head in the clouds.

"WE'VE ARRANGED A society based on science and technology, in which nobody understands anything about science technology. And this combustible mixture of ignorance and power, sooner or later, is going to blow up in our faces. Who is running the science and technology in a democracy if the people don't know anything about it?"
"Science is more than a body of knowledge, it's a way of thinking. A way of skeptically interrogating the universe with a fine understanding of human fallibility. If we are not able to ask skeptical questions, to interrogate those who tell us that something is true, to be skeptical of those in authority, then we're up for grabs for the next charlatan, political or religious, who comes ambling along."

I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.

This stunning portrait of NGC 5335 was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. Some 170,000 light-years across and over 200 million light-years away toward the constellation Virgo, the magnificent spiral galaxy is seen face-on in Hubble's view. Within the galactic disk, loose streamers of star forming regions lie along the galaxy's flocculent spiral arms. But the most striking feature of NGC 5335 is its prominent central bar. Seen in about 30 percent of galaxies, including our Milky Way, bar structures are understood to channel material inward toward the galactic center, fueling star formation. Of course, distant background galaxies are easy to spot, scattered around the sharp Hubble image. Launched in 1990, Hubble is now celebrating its 35th year exploring the cosmos from orbit around planet Earth.

Sad news indeed. If we measure success by how often a composer’s works are performed, Sofia Gubaidulina was likely the most successful female composer in history. (In recent years, Kaija Saariaho was a close second).
