I played original-flavor marathon as a kid and it was a solitary, contemplative game whose genre was almost more "survival horror" than "boomer shooter", with a novel's worth of posthumanist philosophizing text on terminals. Still worth playing if you grab it on Steam actually.

The quickest and easiest inoculation against getting scammed is..accepting that you could definitely fall for it and need to be vigilant. You may still get scammed, but at least you won't be shamefaced about it!
