I grew up in constant fear that the government was going to take me away from my family because of our fundamentalist beliefs. I was told I would need to be willing to protect my future family from armed persecution.

Turns out my cult never wanted freedom. They just didn't want competition.

I love reading the comments section those "Jordan Peterson vs. 20 Atheists" clips of JP getting owned. The JP fans' main counterargument is that the atheists in the clips are "rude," "smug," or some synonym of either. Which is exactly my experience in talking to every JP fan, ever.

Just a quick reminder that a not-insignificant portion of the current administration's supporters believe they are fighting against literal demons by supporting Trump and his cabinet. Just in case you needed a reminder of why believing in fairy tales is a bad idea.

Growing up in the cult, I was taught that Canada was a miserable satanic stronghold of communism and secularism. So if you're wondering if Trump's fundamentalist supporters are going to balk at his ruining our alliance, don't hold your breath. World domination is the goal.

I know it's reductive and unhelpful to paint all Trump supporters as, at the most generous, ignorant idiots who know nothing about how the government is supposed to work. But can we all agree that this seems to describe the entire administration?

I was just chided on Threads for engaging in "nonchalant" blasphemy. I would like to acknowledge and apologize for my actions in this regard. I will try to be better. Moving forward, my blasphemy will be more formal and thoughtful. I will begin with a formal blaspheme:

God can devour feculence.

The attack on the Department of Education is part of a broader push to make the clusterfuck homeschool cult I grew up in the norm for all children.

If you want your kids to be Shiny Happy People, keep putting cult leaders in charge.

I'm comfortable enough in my unbelief to assume an afterlife does not exist. However, if it exists on any level, I will do everything in my ghostly powers to give a ln atomic wedgie to anyone who tries to preach a sermon at my funeral.

Sometimes it really hits me that VeggieTales actually portrayed the SA of Bathsheba by King David as a petty squabble over rubber duckies.

It also hits me how many of my then-fellow Christians totally missed how THAT was the story being referenced.

Me: I mean, my mom "diagnosed" me with everything. ADHD, autism, demons...

Therapist: Wait, demons?

Me: Yes.

Therapist: Were you, like, "BLAAAARGH?" *rolls eyes upward*

Me: No, just disobedient sometimes.

Therapist: Do you think your mom may have had something going on?

Me: Demons? Maybe.

Every once in a while, it hits me that I was allegedly taught the nuances and culture of an ancient Mesopotamian world by a bunch of men whose only qualifications were:

1. A clean shirt.

2. The ability to read complete sentences sometimes.

I can pull a collection of electric rocks from my pocket and get information on practically anything. Access to information has never been easier or more instant in human history.

Why do we keep putting people in charge who celebrate their personal ignorance?

I recently posted on FB about people who tried to pray away some bad weather in my area and got some pushback for picking on people looking for comfort in the face of fear. Have we already forgotten the consequences of people praying the disaster away rather than having a rational common sense plan?
