I had the privilege last week of being a “camp counselor” for my theater’s youth-oriented Film Camp. It was fun shaping the minds of burgeoning cinephiles.

Below is a candid picture of me explaining how TITANIC uses film language to establish there was not, in fact, room on the door for Jack.

Between the sophomoric sex jokes and lispy affects, I actually think the arc has something real to say about navigating relationship dynamics. And considering how same-sex relationships can so often be fraught with toxic elements, I think there’s something genuinely resonant there.

But I sincerely love Satan’s character arc, which starts with him stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship and ends with him realizing he deserves much better than his terrible boyfriend.

That’s not to say it’s “good representation” in film; it obviously isn’t, and the comedic priemise comes from a time when for many the worst insult you could lov at straight men is to call them gay.

With South Park roaring back to the monoculture this week, I have a confession to make: the Saddam/Satan relationship is one of my favorite gay couples ever on screen.

Watching Andor (only on episode 8, so no spoilers yet pls!) It occurs to me that Syril and Dedra have basically the same anti-romantic dynamic as Sharon Fisherman and Edgar from ‘Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.’

This is a big moment for Rhea Perlman fans, with her appearance in both The Studio and Poker Face.
