Incorporating Universal Screening and School Based Mental Health Initiatives in the Classroom | Brain & Behavior Research Foundation Teachers, school counselors, and other educational professionals are on the front line of interacting with children with mental health issues and can often be among some of the first people to see that a child is struggling. Enhancing the potential for early intervention is important and because educational professionals have relationships with students and their families, they are able to make appropriate referrals for evaluation.

Last chance to register! Dr. Constantino will discuss a public health approach for teachers & will provide educators with a deeper understanding of the importance of incorporating universal screening & school based mental health initiatives in the classroom. https://ow.ly/izlK50XqFrz

Team Observes How Brain Activity, Energy Use, and Blood Flow Synchronize During Normal Sleep, Opening a Window on Sleep and Neurological Disorders | Brain & Behavior Research Foundation What happens in the brain when we fall asleep? Researchers who study this question hope to understand not only how sleep provides an interval during which the brain can repair and restore itself, but also how natural variations or dysfunction in the processes associated with the sleep/wake transition and the progression through various sleep phases may be involved in sleep-related disorders.

Multiple brain monitoring and imaging technologies revealed how brain activity, energy use, and blood flow interact in the transition from wakefulness to deep sleep. https://ow.ly/N3g450XooKS

Study Finds Anhedonia Symptoms Are Especially Vulnerable in Major Depression Patients with High Bodily Inflammation Levels | Brain & Behavior Research Foundation It has been estimated that one in three people with major depressive disorder (MDD) exhibits low-grade systemic inflammation. That is to say, they chronically show elevated levels of inflammatory markers in their bloodβ€”higher than is typical in healthy people.

Study suggests #depressed adults who have high systemic levels of #inflammation may be at increased risk for #anhedonia following an inflammatory exposure related to an infection or worsening of an underlying inflammatory disorder https://ow.ly/q8tr50XlQgR

In First-Episode Psychosis Patients, Machine Learning Predicted Illness Trajectories to Potentially Improve Outcomes | Brain & Behavior Research Foundation There is broad agreement among psychiatrists, based on many years of clinical experience, that early treatment following a first episode of psychosis (FEP) provides the best chance for improving a patient’s subsequent outcome. In many cases, FEP is followed within 6 months to several years by a diagnosis of schizophrenia. While this is not the case in every instance, among those who do go on to manifest the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia, there is considerable variability in how each individual fares.

In 411 people with first episode #psychosis (FEP), researchers found 3 clusters of illness trajectories. Using data available at intake, they used machine learning to retrospectively predict in 75% of cases which path each patient would follow

Research Sheds Light on Brain Mechanism Involved in Motivation Decline in the Elderly and How It Might Be Reversed | Brain & Behavior Research Foundation Age-associated psychiatric conditions such as depression are thought to be associated, in a significant number of cases, with reduced motivation to engage in effortful activities. This comes as no surprise, since lower levels of motivation also are widely seen in younger people who suffer from depression. In young people, very low motivation is atypical; in older people, it may be part of the normal aging process.

Mouse experiments indicated that in the #brain’s VTA, lower levels of BDNF contributes to reduced motivation in elderly individuals. This points to potential ways to boost motivation during #aging #depression.
