A post on X by Paris Schutz (@paschutz
), a CBS Chicago reporter, timestamped 23 hours ago, includes a photo of a car with a damaged hood and text overlay. The post reports that journalist Asal Rezaei was doing her job when an ICE agent shot directly at her car today, unprovoked, with chemicals entering through an open window, causing her to feel sick for two hours. It mentions no protester was in sight, and she was simply driving by to check the scene, about 50 feet from the entrance, an area local authorities and news organizations have been monitoring for weeks. The post also notes this incident follows the detention and release of journalist Steve Held the previous day.
ICE is out of control. They must be reined in.

Huntington's disease successfully treated for first time
One of the most devastating diseases finally has a treatment that can slow its progression and transform lives, tearful doctors tell BBC.
In the early years of my PhD I remember being asked if we'd ever treat or cure diseases like HIV or Huntington's. I remember saying maybe, but not knowing if I believed. Seeing research pay off as real impact on human lives is - incredible.

A huge shoutout to all the dedicated grants management specialists at the NIH who are working around the clock to push grants out before the Sep 30 deadline. And also to the POs responding to frantic emails.
Not an easy job under the best of circumstances and right now it's the pits.
Thank you!

A graph of the US population that is left-handed, by birth year. It drops from about 5% to a low of a little more than 3% from ~1890 to ~1910. It then rises steadily to about 12% around 1950, and stays at 12% out to 2000.
This is the graph we show whenever someone talks about how back in the old days there weren't (people who are not whoever the person speaking thinks are the default).
Mostly we do this to underscore that a rise in apparent frequency isn't always a rise in real frequency.

Gov. Greg Abbott pardons Daniel Perry, veteran who killed police brutality protester in 2020
A Travis County jury sentenced Perry to 25 years in prison last year, prompting Abbott to ask the state parole board to review his case.
I am just going to keep posting that the TX governor recently pardoned a political murderer.
The dude texted "I'm going to shoot protestors", then went and shot a Black Lives Matter protester. He was convicted in a jury trial.
Hard to find a more blatant example of celebrating political violence.

It's been a busy time for NIH grants staff βΒ the agency seems on track to spend its budget this fiscal year
But, because of multi-year funding, fewer projects are being funded than in previous years.
The number of R grants has fallen from 5,633 to 3,758

I once had a student explicitly argue that he was the customer to be catered to.
I explained that, if we *had* to use the customer framing, he wasn't the customer but the product. He was being given an education & then a degree that future employers would see value in.

If your hypothesis is: Tylenol use during pregnancy & folate deficiency is linked to autism.
Then your job is to go out and find as much evidence as possible to absolutely demolish that hypothesis. That is how science works.
Republicans have it all backwards. They want to prove their hypotheses.
