for a while, one of the first books that came up in our catalog when you searched "trans men" was irreversible damage. so i guess i'm just kind of out of patience for this sort of thing nowadays. lol

sometimes i really do want to throw all the certified Book Romanticizers into an academic library stacks job for a year so they can handle all the heinous texts that i do and learn what it feels like to swallow the urge to stuff it behind a shelf where nobody can find it bc it's against ala ethics.

i love books and reading. i would love to see people do more of it. but i suspect decline in reading comes more from people not having the time and mental energy for it due to struggling to stay alive in a collapsing world. books are morally neutral media of information and ideology.

also, frankly, even if you're reading "good" or challenging works it doesn't inherently make you a good person, as natsume points out. i can tell you from working in academia that there are lots of people with phds here who are hateful and stupid fucking assholes.

by sheer numbers of books read per year my dad puts me to shame. he's a prolific reader who always had like five books checked out from the library at a given time when i lived with him. he's also a right-winger who reads shitty and reactionary books.

Tucked inside the Republican bill for health care subsidies, a clause that would restrict the money from being used for abortion (with exception for rape, incest or life of the mother) or for "any sex trait modification procedure or service."

i very rarely get mad at strangers who unknowingly misgender me because everyone grew up in Gender Prison and makes assumptions without even consciously realizing it, and there's a lot of gendered language in the south that can be hard to unlearn. but it's nice when someone reflects like that!

i am very aware that refusing to have short hair leads to me passing less but it was kind of refreshing to have someone state outright that that was why they got it wrong, esp bc i know long-haired cis guys deal with it too. idk i just appreciated that she was so upfront about it lol she was sweet

had a weirdly gender-affirming misgendering getting the christmas tree yesterday where the employee called us ladies and then after she saw my face/heard me speak went "i'm sorry! i made an assumption because of your long hair, my son's hair is long and he gets mistaken for a woman all the time"

i met her daughter for the first time the day after she was born in the hospital and now she's fifteen. i really want to reforge a relationship with her and my cousin. i know they've also suffered a lot from so much that's happened this year and have complicated feelings about the family too.

i have two cousins on my dad's (evil) side of the family that are genuinely really good and sweet people but i struggle to keep in contact with since i don't talk to anyone else, but i reached out to my cousin about wanting to get some gifts for her daughter and she gave me the sweetest response 🥹

i think there's a trickledown effect from the intensely consumerist attitude towards reading that comes from places like booktok to how some people view writing. like the only objective with it is to get a publishing deal and show off your novel's cover on social media. it's really sad to me.

it's absolutely possible to write in the way artists sketch, there shouldn't be pressure for every idea you have to become something full and polished and 150k words long, you're not failing as a writer if you're not finishing everything or even a lot. it's art and you can do it for its own sake.
