...actually now that I wrote all that out, I think that's just going to be the answer I give on the podcast interview, embarrassment about not having a degree and all! I like being really transparent in my job, and I love having a job where I can do that and feel good about it.

Ironically, there were two big reasons I didn't go to college:

1) I ran away from home at 17.
2) Once I established myself and was ready to start college after running away, my abuser stopped me.

Yeah, part of the reason I work in domestic violence is because I'm a DV survivor.

One question that has me nervous is about my education. Confession: I didn't go to college!

I'm all on-the-job experience, personal research, and certifications. Granted, it's over 10 years of demonstrated success in content, but it's still hard to tell professionals you don't have a degree.

It's funny, I used to host two podcasts, so I've probably been on like 900+ episodes. But it's been a few years since I was active on podcasts, so I'm actually finding myself kinda nervous about an interview I'm giving for work tomorrow. But also very excited, I get to share lots of cool stuff.

A Sawney Beane-inspired encounter for my #13thAge campaign. PCs went into a cave to find the "evil cult" and their "demon gem."

I layered tracks of screaming and moaning with an audio "this is what hearing voices is like" example. I also used like 30 mooks and named EVERY SINGLE one of them.

I can't find this video anymore but this comes right after "the Bible, if you believe any of that shit!"

I remembered a hyperfixation I had ages ago, before I knew what hyperfixations were (or that I'm ADHD). I can't for the LIFE of me remember WHY I was so fixated on this. It's neat, sure, but there is nothing about it that sets my brain on fire.

I'm want to do this more/better by creating NPCs/places they fall in love with and want to help. Not (just) for material or mechanical gain, but because they're invested in the people and places. I'm really looking to increase investment in the world.

How do you help players care about your world?

I saw this about LOTR's narrative construction, and it made me think about worldbuilding as a GM. I run homebrew, and while I put a lot of work into detailing the world and making it interesting, I haven't focused on making the players CARE about the world they're in. #ttrpg #gm #gming #dnd

JUSTICE FOR SUPPORTING CHARACTERS

Ignoring the work you've done on a character in favor of indulging your main character is a choice any creator is free to make. But I don't think it's a particularly good one from a storytelling craft perspective.

And in this case, though I'm trying to hold out and give the benefit of the doubt...

I just expect those characters to act like themselves.

Even if it's a single panel of SC crying alone, I'd feel better. I want to see their pain explored because they're a great character who's had amazing development that I've enjoyed deeply.

Continuity of characterization is important.

This plotline has been HIGHLY controversial with the comic's fans, which is why I'm trying to stay vague and not attack the creator. It's their comic! It's their characters!

I've just been reading them (and other comics by this creator) since 2007ish.

And I like most of the characters!

I don't think all characters have to do the right thing all the time; perfection is boring! If I quit reading this comic, it's not because of the MC doing a Hurtful Thing. It's because the author isn't writing true to SC's characterization, in favor of not shining a bad light on MC.

By not addressing it, it feels like the author is falling into the "Creator's Pet" trope. They're indulging the MC with lots of other characters' support and ignoring the harm the MC's actions caused by writing SC in a way that ignores their well-stated and previously explained trauma.

Meanwhile, MC has basically washed their hands of SC and is happily avoiding other consequences of their actions. Considering how much the fear of this exact action has driven SC and their amazingly well-handled character development, I'm so disappointed.

A specific supporting character who has a good, well-established backstory *reason* to be devastated, that the main character was very aware of. But so far (going on a few months now), all we've seen is the supporting character continue to support the main character, despite MC's hurtful behavior.

And not "challenge the reader" uncomfortable. This is "main character gets their way" at the expense of supporting characters. Which isn't necessarily a bad plot...if we saw the devastating consequences for one of those supporting characters (who *does* happen to be one of my favorite characters).

Reflecting on how my webcomic RSS feed has shrunk over the years is bittersweet. Especially since the last few comics are gone because I quit reading them, for various reasons. I'm thinking a lot about this because a comic I've been reading for 15 years is running a plotline now that bothers me.
