One thing I did not get to mention in this piece is that Rob Jetten is extremely physically fit. If he becomes Prime Minister he will probably be the most physically fit European leader apart from maybe Alexander Stubb

Peru: looks like at last the Congress is going to impeach Dina Boluarte, the most incompetent president the country has had in a very long time. The question is whether anyone better will replace her.

Swifts’ decline: how can Britons help these remarkable birds?
Campaigners are calling for compulsory ‘swift bricks’ in new homes to provide nesting sites
This is sad to hear. Here in Madrid at the moment, swifts are in full flight, cruising, diving, constantly in movement, a delight to watch in the evening warmth

Adiós Mario Vargas Llosa, a great Peruvian man of letters. He will be remembered above all for half a dozen great novels, especially "Conversación en la Catedral". Whatever one thought of his political commitments, he became a kind of super-ego for Latin America. He will be missed. RIP.

When a school xeroxes a book to "train" its pupils, it pays the author a license fee. When Meta uses books to "train" its AI models, it just steals them. We need a class action suit against Meta and other book thieves

Tariffs Will Destroy the Best Cure for the Trade Deficit
US exports not only reduce deficits, they also bring higher-paying jobs and greater innovation. A tariff-driven trade war will hold back their growth.
Trump’s upcoming tariff barrage will hold back U.S.-based exporters and the growth they can bring. In my latest for @opinion.bloomberg.com, I argue that the U.S. should shift its focus from cutting imports to the other side of the trade equation and boost exports.
