What I mean is that a lot of successful people are good, but not a lot of good people are successful. Now the question is if luck can explain the discrepancy here?

You can be really good yet still not be very successful. There are many great yet unsuccessful musicians, writers, artists or there. (In the case where success = money that is). The inverse though is less true

You can definitely improve your odds but some aspect of luck still remains. Tricky part is to quantify it :D
