We got talking about London and one said they visited recently and it was "very odd" and I asked how so and they said they visited Harrods and it was full of ladies in headscarves. "The Harrods that had been owned by the Fayeds since the 80s?" I asked innocently.

But mostly what I met were retired people from the middle of the country. And they are incredibly casual bigots. They don't even know they're doing it - they say it like they're remarking on the weather. I had forgotten folks like this existed.

The meals were interesting. Four to a table, and they insisted on pairing people up. So I met all sorts of people. I met a fellow gamedev! Though she works for a different company. But we knew some people in common. Small world.

Historically (like... the early 80s) because there were no tools, the way you got stuff into the game was coding. The artist wrote an anim player. The musician wrote the code that drove the sound chip.

But then Deluxe Paint and trackers were invented, and people could specialise a bit more.

Watching this, and the murder of Renee Good, I am struck by how these guys are all highly trained. I'm not a hard-core military guy - I was only in there for a few years. But I recognize the signs of people following training. None of this is panic and reaction. It's all training.
