Can't fault the clarity of Labour's message on protest. There are BAD protesters who must be punished (Irish musicians, anti-genocide vicars) and there are GOOD protesters whose views deserve respect (masked thugs with petrol bombs trying to start a pogrom)

Lecturer (Education) in Modern European History at Queen's University Belfast Apply now for the Lecturer (Education) in Modern European History role on jobs.ac.uk - the leading job board for higher education jobs. View details.

A proper 12-month replacement post with decent salary (for UKHE, at least) in modern European history. Belfast is a decent place to live - relatively affordable apart from extortionate pint prices - and I can personally vouch for what a great & friendly School we have.

If you’re Irish this is a very interesting and strangely satisfying (I don’t know why?) thread.

It’ll be heart breaking - once again - when we inevitably find out that the programme is full of posh people masquerading as working class. Because that always happens.

Watched a Curzon screening of ‘My Beautiful Laundrette’ (1985) and never felt more in 2025. Thatcher’s Britain as portrayed in the film feels very present. Watch it or rewatch.

I'm so tired of hearing that we need to "teach our students how to use AI" when the thing they most need to use it is a critical-thinking skill set that can only be acquired by NOT using it. I'm tired of hearing that it's inevitable. I'm tired.

In Ireland people stay quiet during a film. Well at any rate that was my experience and frame of reference up until NYC.

2006 NYC screening of The Devil Wear’s Prada. I’d never attended a film screening in the US before so wasn’t used to audience interaction with a film. Lots of quips and hollering at Meryl Streep for even just appearing on screen. I thought the interaction was wild. A paratext of sorts.

I can tell you that in the 17th and 18th century when Britain was inventing the fossil fueled economy, and when people called their society a patriarchy and meant it as a compliment, no one said this kind of thing.
