for the [content language] setting intended to only show selected languages on the feed, it does seem to take effect immediately upon checking/unchecking a language and reloading the feed

if this might make a difference it makes me wonder if the display interface language might influence the discovery feed language as well, i’ll def be putting this one to the test

oh this is interesting since in the user interface settings, it’s implied the [preferred language] selection is only used for setting default translation option, but there is also a separate option for displaying only chosen language posts on the feed and it sounds like it could also be about that

if there’s a timeframe sampling involved like your hypothesis i can see it impacting the number of post per language as well

there’s def another possibility with more english posts making it into the discovery feed being a result of more posts in English in the all-purpose firehouse regardless of number of non-eng accounts followed, so i may have to experiment with it some more or until bsky decide to adjust the balance

but it might make sense if your hypothesis is true since non-english art accounts have a tendency to only post and not interact

I had experimented with improving the balance of non-english posts picked up on the default feed by following more non-english accounts, but those never seem to gain big traction in the discovery feed similar to twxtter’s default feed unless I disable english posts altogether

oh I see, interesting there’d be an interaction threshold (for followed accs interacting with each other?) thrown into the mix along with following, sounds like trying to increase the number of curated acc on default feed with more interactions might help with pushing off the trending posts

i’m using custom feeds myself but i am interested in seeing if there is a best method to train or curate the default feed behavior to organically surface posts as it would be an indicator of how much effort an average user would have to put in for the default site behavior to be of good utility

my current theory is perhaps a higher threshold of curated followed user is needed to influence the default feed as accs appear to start with varied recs but fall back to default recced content once posts are exhausted

oh nevermind spoke too soon it would fallback to default no accs following content as soon as the expected hypercurated posts were exhausted it’s back to the void for me

not sure if it’s recent influx of user or algo improvement but I’m seeing an improvement on the default discovery feed here reminiscing the kind I’d see on a hypercurated default twxtter feed now
