yeah like there are actually a lot of different kinds of jpegs and different settings for the compression algorithm (quality, if they're using fast integer or floating point, are interlaced, etc etc) that i also don't think that most people are aware of haha so not even jpegs are all made the same.

also i think the most annoying thing about webp was that it wasn't compatible with like. so many things until quite recently lmao so that's also part of the issue but at this point it's just like. well. i suppose it is here.

also notable: tiffs are huge files for that reason, which is why you don't see them that often, and instead when you typically see a lossless image online, it's a png or webp (which can have either lossy or lossless compression)

like people in the print industry will often tiffs (which predate jpegs and pngs) if they want to preserve as much quality as possible, because it's lossless and can hold multiple color profile settings, including the CMYK color space, which makes it ideal for that. so it's all about usage.

anyways most people don't know how images work and that's fine bc most people don't need to but i do think that it boils down to people not enjoying change. there's a bunch of image file formats outside of jpegs, pngs, and gifs (and now webp) and they all have their place/time
