also i distinctly remember there were a lot of communities that had like. entire threads dedicated to harassing autistic teenagers online for having "cringey mary sue ocs" and making fun of their art/fanfiction relentlessly and that was just normalized.

fandom will always contain the ills of the society it exists within, no matter how many people promise it was a big safe haven where everyone gets to have fun. a LOT of marginalized folks were excluded and extensively attacked pretty regularly ever since it became a Thing.

everyone is crammed together yet more anxious than ever to interact with each other. algorithms show you the most polarizing shit for clicks and engagement. stuff people make out of a labor of love is "content" and showing passion and being thoughtful about what you love is apparently cringe.

i do sometimes understand the nostalgia people have for old internet fandom communities but i think people think that fandom has somehow changed in a unique way instead of like. the reason why internet fandom feels like it's gone to shit is because the internet has gone to shit in general.
