Social media really does skew people's idea of what "mainstream" is.

The debris and the bodies flying through the air... one for the ages!

A German soldier poses beside a 38cm British shell, sometime during the Great War.

These shells were fired from the massive Ordnance BL 15-inch howitzer. Each of these guns weighed over 90 tons, and only 12 were build in total.

Better than a Pony: Ambassadors of the Mamluk Sultanate (Egypt) present a giraffe as part of their tribute to Timur. 1436.

(Reportedly the tribute also included nine large ostriches)

Also, trucks! Nazi Germany's largest truck manufacturer was Opel, a wholly-owned subsidiary of General. They would make 87,000 3-ton trucks by 1945--more than Mercedes-Benz, Bussing-NAG, and Magirus combined. (Ford also had a factory making trucks in Cologne)

Most photos of the uprising were taken by the German forces. They were determined to showcase the fighters as "bandits" and "inhuman." But no one with a soul would doubt which side was human in this fight.

Members of the Jewish resistance, captured during the suppression of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. April-May 1943.

Note the SS soldiers and their smirks. Evil does not always arrive grim and unfeeling. Sometimes it is rapturous; sometimes it delights in the depravity, the suffering, the destruction.

Many cases! I'd recommend Edwin Black's article "The Nazi Party: General Motors & the Third Reich", which is available free online. Really good showcase of the ways that American companies (in this case GM) assisted and approved of Germany's fascism and war machine.

Sadly it's even worse. I don't think any soldiers on Bloody Sunday clapped after they shot protestors or called them "effing bitches"

You also don't need to play the first. I was gifted it, and, as someone with almost no experience or interest in Wild West history/culture, was completely blown away!

Specifically, this was at the American supply base in Bakharitza, near the city of Arkhangelsk. During both World Wars, Arkhangelsk was a vital port of entry for Allied aid.

Americans enjoy a Red Cross delivery in Russia, 17 December 1918.

These troops are from the American Expeditionary Force, North Russia--part of the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War.

They were also known as the Polar Bear Expedition. Brrr!

Those ground troops were part of what was called the Brazilian Expeditionary Force. This made Brazil the only country in Latin America to fight Nazis face-to-face!

Nurses of the Brazilian Air Force (Força Aérea Brasileira) during World War II. 31 October 1944

Of all countries in Latin America, Brazil contributed the most to the Allied war effort. Their navy fought up and down the Atlantic, and they also deployed ground troops to Italy.

Petrol-electrical hybrid engine... Longitudinal torsion bar suspension... Porsche's war vehicles were fascinating (and extremely messy)

To American viewers, this might look like a scene from the Old West or the Oregon Trail. But no: this is a Boer family, traversing the veld of South Africa during the Boer War. 1900.
